An natural disaster of magnitude 7.0 has struck 82km east of the Loyalty Islands in New Caledonia, the United States Geological Survey says. The quake was initially recorded as 6.6 magnitude, but is now being reported as 6.4. The agency said waves as high as one meter above the high-tide mark were forecast to hit New Caledonia and smaller waves were expected in Vanuatu.
