Uber to ban riders who get rotten rating from drivers

Uber is draped on the front of the New York Stock Exchange. The company says that starting Wednesday May 29 riders with a rating from drivers that’s significantly below average could lose their ability

The changes in the app come a month after a student from the University of SC was killed allegedly by a man who posed as her Uber driver. Many obnoxious, rude, or otherwise problematic riders have remained live on the system, but that's about to change.

The announcement of ratings-based rider deactivations comes alongside Uber rolling out a new set of Community Guidelines.

Other people said the move by Uber, which is now a near-ubiquitous service in most major U.S. cities, was akin to China's social credit system, which is created to reward and penalize people based on their behavior. The company is introducing a panic button in the application for riders who need to call 911 after the company did the same for the driver's app near the end of a year ago.

Uber has unveiled a new policy that enables the company to kick riders with low ratings to the curb.

Uber encourages low-rated riders to improve their ratings by showing politeness and refraining from leaving trash in the vehicle and asking drivers to exceed the speed limit. Across the globe, an estimated 110 million people actively use the service to get around. (Your rating is displayed under your name in the menu bar.) Ratings are always reported as averages, and neither riders nor drivers see the individual rating of a particular trip.

Amash applauded by largely friendly crowd at town hall
But Amash, a Republican with consistent libertarian tendencies, has always been an independent voice in Congress. Mueller's statement fueled an increase in calls from Democratic lawmakers for impeachment proceedings, and U.S.

Uber has publicly released its community guidelines, which include a list of several inappropriate behaviors that can get you banned from Uber. It's unclear if riders will be able to regain access to Uber after a period of time, or if they could side-step the ban by creating a new account.

"Respect is a two-way street, and so is accountability", Parker said.

The ride share app uses a five star rating system and after each ride both the driver and passenger rate the experience.

It's not clear exactly how low a users' rating has to drop in order for them to be in danger of deactivation. To educate the public, the company plans on displaying a full-screen summary of the guidelines to Uber riders, starting with those based in the USA and Canada.

Uber will give customers an opportunity to redeem themselves should they come close to being subject to a ratings-based rider deactivation.
