Intel Details 10nm Ice Lake Processor; Brings 18% Increase In IPC

Intel teases Ice lake and details project Athena

The Ice Lake chips will be sold as Intel's 10th Generation Core processors and will come in the standard Core i3, Core i5, and Core i7 variants, running up to four cores and eight threads. But don't expect any huge CPU performance boost from the company's new "Ice Lake" processors when they start arriving in laptops later this year. This allows owners to use even their super thin and lightweight laptops for heavy duty projects as well as for basic entertainment.

Finally, Intel showed off its Intel Optane memory M15, which is the next generation of its Optane memory, offering higher performance and lower power consumption than previous generations.

Another major focus is graphics improvement with the new Gen11 graphics engine, which is supposed to offer 2x performance increase.

Intel is also introducing integrated support for Thunderbolt 3 and Intel Wi-Fi 6 Gig+ for the first time which enables 3x faster wireless speeds. Overall, they offer 5x accelerated AI performance, as well as nearly 3x faster wireless speeds.

Trump, Biden Assailing Each Other Way Ahead of 2020 Election
Toshihiro Nakayama, a Japan fellow at the Wilson Center in Washington, said: "You can not embrace this president with nuance". However, Politico reports talks between the two likely won't advance quickly until after Tokyo's election in July.

Codenamed Ice Lake, the 10th-gen Intel Core processors are also the first to be based on 10nm architecture. Customers will likely be able to purchase desktops and laptops powered by the new chip just in time for the winter holidays.

Project Athena aims to deliver on what Intel is calling the "key experience indicators" (KEI) that people are looking for with personal computing. The processors were developed by Intel's Israel team in Haifa. Metrics are based on day-in-the-life research of notebook users at home or at work under real-world conditions. Thanks to Intel's new Gen 11 integrated graphics processor (IGP) silicon on board, the chips can run a game like CS:GO at 75 to 100 frames per second, a substantial upgrade from older Intel silicon, which could only muster 30 to 40 frames per second.

Intel also showed off its ambient PC prototype (code-named "Mohawk River"), which shows how the company is aiming to make computers that are more immersive, connected and intelligent. Designed with gamers in mind, the new special edition 9th Gen Intel Core i9-9900KS delivers 5GHz all-core turbo, and Intel Performance Maximizer. The firm admits that Ice Lake is the first major update to its processor line since Skylake back in 2015, something that enthusiasts are very well aware of.
