Jamal Abdi: NIAC Statement on Trump's Tweet Threat to "End" Iran

Iran dismisses possibility of conflict, says does not want war

Last year, Iran-US relations hit a new low as the US pulled out of a 2015 nuclear deal and reimposed unilateral sanctions that had been lifted in exchange for Tehran scaling back its nuclear programme.

Trump also reacted to a ruling by a judge against a lawsuit challenge a House subpoena for his financial records.

An Iranian commander says even their short-range missiles can reach warships in the Persian Gulf; Jennifer Griffin reports from the Pentagon.

The warning comes days after drone attacks on Saudi oil pumping stations that Saudi Arabia blamed on Iran-backed rebels in neighbouring Yemen, and in the same week that four oil tankers were sabotaged off the UAE's Fujairah coast.

The warning appeared rooted in what happened 30 years ago after Operation Praying Mantis, a daylong naval battle in the Persian Gulf between USA forces and Iran during the country's long war with Iraq.

Some members of U.S. Congress are expressing frustration about the lack of Iran-related information they are receiving from the Trump administration. He also said he's in favor of a military response if the Iranian threats against American personnel and interests are activated.

John Wick 3 has dethroned Endgame at the box office

State Department officials said threats in the region were credible and based on intelligence showing Iranian-backed militias had been moving personnel and weaponry as well as stepping up surveillance of US and USA -affiliated facilities in Iraq and other parts of the Middle East.

The president's remarks strike a much different tone than comments he delivered Sunday, warning Iran that if it pursues conflict with the US, "that will be the official end of Iran!"

Zarif added that though President Donald Trump has said he is not seeking war, "some that have sat around him" are pushing such a conflict. Graham tweeted after a briefing with National Security Advisor John Bolton.

- The New York Times reports the White House is reviewing military plans that could result in sending 120,000 US troops to the Middle East if Iran attacks American forces or steps up work on nuclear weapons.

All three airlines, as well as Oman Air, did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Saturday about the warning. Iran has threatened to prevent shipping in Hormuz in case of a military confrontation with the US.

The NYT reported that during a Wednesday morning meeting in the Situation Room, President Trump sent a message to his hawkish aides that he does not want the intensifying American pressure campaign against the Iranians to explode into open conflict. The Chinese foreign minister pledged to maintain the nuclear deal and work with Iran to eliminate "complicated disturbing factors", Xinhua said.
