GOP frowns on, but does not punish, Amash's impeachment call

Justin Amash is the first Republican congressman to say Trump engaged in impeachable conduct

"Never a fan of @justinamash, a total lightweight who opposes me and some of our great Republican ideas and policies just for the sake of getting his name out there through controversy", Trump tweeted Sunday.

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) at a hearing as Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein testifies before the House Judiciary Committee about special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of Russia's alleged 2016 election interference, on December 13, 2017.

The development came after Amash became the first Republican to call for Trump's impeachment.

Top House Republican Kevin McCarthy pushed back Tuesday against Rep. Justin Amash and his call for President Donald Trump's impeachment, saying the Michigan Republican is out of step with others in the party and with Americans.

Rep. Debbie Dingell, D-Mich., described a tense meeting Monday night in which a vocal minority of Pelosi's leadership team spoke in favor of launching an impeachment inquiry, and Pelosi held firm.

"That inquiry is also what happened during Watergate", Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) told the Postin an interview following the Democrats' private meeting.

Any member of the House of Representatives can introduce an impeachment resolution, not just the speaker. There was an investigation that preceded it.

Democratic Reps. Jamie Raskin (Md.), Joe Neguse (Colo.), and David Cicilline (R.I.) - all of whom are members of the House Judiciary Committee - reportedly joined Lieu in pressuring the House Speaker to support an impeachment inquiry. "I think that I have the evidence I need, based on the Mueller report".

Trump weekend tweets on abortion aimed at toning down debate
Protestors will gather in Public Square on Tuesday to rally against the "heartbeat" abortion ban signed by Gov. And I know there's a lot of loud-mouthing, but it's, this is who Alabama elected.

"There's no doubt that opening an inquiry strengthens the hand of Congress in forcing compliance with subpoenas, whether it's for documents or individuals", Cicilline told thePost. When asked what he plans to do next, Amash made it clear he won't be the one to begin an impeachment inquiry.

"This isn't about politics at all".

Amash claimed that Barr purposely misrepresented Mueller's report and said Trump engaged in conduct that was impeachable, the first Republican to align with the Democrats who want to see the president removed from office.

Amash drew backlash from fellow Republicans stretching from House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), House Republican Whip Steve Scalise (R-SC), Republican National Committee (RNC) chairwoman Ronna McDaniel, and the Michigan GOP chair condemned Amash's comments.

"While impeachment should be undertaken only in extraordinary circumstances, the risk we face in an environment of extreme partisanship is not that Congress will employ it as a remedy too often but rather that Congress will employ it so rarely that it can not deter misconduct", Amash wrote. But a better, more relevant question is this: "Why aren't there more Democrats willing to say the same?"

"I really believe we are now at the point where we have to start an impeachment inquiry. I don't think there's going to be a stampede based on what Amash says.when five Democrats voted with us to impeach Clinton they were not exactly hailed as heroes", the SC senator said.

"If you have a president who thinks he's king, and isn't accountable to anybody, and is above the law", Jayapal said, "that is absolutely not acceptable".
