If Tehran attacks, it will be 'official end of Iran'

US President Donald Trump greets Switzerland’s President Ueli Maurer before a meeting at the White House

But in a sign of brewing confrontation a year after Washington quit world powers' 2015 nuclear deal with Iran and reimposed sanctions on it, Tehran announced a fourfold increase in its rate of production of low-grade uranium enrichment.

Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, one of 24 Democrats vying for a presidential nomination, said on ABC's This Week with George Stephanopoulos that Trump was "leading us down this unsafe path toward a war with Iran".

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman discussed regional developments, including efforts to strengthen security and stability, in a phone call with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, the Saudi Media Ministry tweeted on Sunday. It accuses Iran of threats to USA troops and interests.

In recent weeks, concern has been increasing that National Security Adviser John Bolton, a long-time hawk on Iran who was instrumental in instigating the invasion of Iraq under George W. Bush, might be working to edge the administration closer to some kind of military action against Tehran.

"The enemies of Islamic Iran are incapable in operation fields and have resorted to media warfare due to their fear of Iran's military power", Iranian Gen. Ali Hajilou said at a military ceremony in Mianeh.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. "And that is something that the Iranians needs to think about very, very carefully", Hunt told reporters on the sidelines of the World Health Assembly in Geneva.

As tensions grow between Tehran and Washington, the British foreign secretary warned Iran not to test the United States' resolve; the European Union called on both sides to calm down and Iraqi politicians expressed concern over Baghdad being dragged into a possible conflict as rockets landed near U.S Embassy.

"We are no longer a country that will stand for your demented words of violence & death".

Trump, in an interview with Fox News recorded last week and broadcast Sunday, said he does not "want to fight" but that when it comes to Iran, "you can't let them have nuclear weapons".

The State Department says a "low-grade rocket" fell inside the green zone in Baghdad, less than a kilometer from the USA embassy Sunday.

President Donald Trump issued an ominous warning to Iran on Sunday, suggesting that if the Islamic republic attacks American interests, it will be destroyed. It has been filmed by the U.S. Navy on Friday carrying out exercises with other American warships in the Arabian Sea, which is over 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) away.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has dismissed the possibility of war erupting, saying Tehran did not want conflict and no country had the "illusion it can confront Iran".

Mr. Trump's tweet came after he seemingly sought to soften his tone on Iran following days of heightened tension sparked by the sudden deployment by the US of bombers and an aircraft carrier to the Persian Gulf over still-unspecified threats. But he said the U.S.is going to fail in the near future "because they are frustrated and hopeless" and are looking for a way out of the current escalation.

"Since the president reneged on the Iran nuclear deal previous year", said Abdi, "the administration's policies have been geared towards provoking Iran into retaliation to give cover for a perilous escalation favored by administration hawks".

The rocket hit about a mile from the USA embassy in Baghdad, according to reports.

- The New York Times reports the White House is reviewing military plans that could result in sending 120,000 US troops to the Middle East if Iran attacks American forces or steps up work on nuclear weapons. The aircraft carrier has been deployed to the Middle East to deter Iranian aggression.

Trump did not elaborate further, nor did the White House.

Hunt said that Britain wanted "the situation to de-escalate" and urged Iran "to pull back from the destabilising activities it does throughout the region".

Zarif referenced both Alexander the Great and Genghis Khan as two historical leaders that Persia outlasted.

He ended his tweet with #neverthreatenaniranian and: "Try respect - it works!" The Washington Post reported last week that Trump was "not comfortable with all this "regime change" talk" and that the president "wants to talk to the Iranians; he wants a deal".
