Donald Trump's peace conference will fail, Palestinians say

Palestinian officials will not attend a US-led conference in Bahrain next month created to draw investment to the West Bank and Gaza Strip, Reuters reports.

The Manama conference, entitled "Peace to Prosperity", is billed as an global economic "workshop" that will bring together government and business leaders to help jump-start the economic portion of the broader U.S. peace initiative.

The economic portion of the administration's plan, which is being spearheaded by Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, has been "met with very, very good feedback", the senior official said.

The Trump administration made a decision to roll out the economic and political parts of the plan separately, the official said, and there would be no discussion of the political aspects of the plan at the coming workshop.

Shtayyeh did not immediately confirm whether a Palestinian delegation would attend the June 25-26 event in Manama - which USA officials have predicted will include representatives and business executives from Europe, the Middle East and Asia, as well as some finance ministers.

He said the peace plan and suggested proposals were not, in fact, a USA plan but instead, "the Trump administration's vision is being implemented on the ground with their decisions and positions on Jerusalem, settlements and refugees, among others". Kushner is said to have modeled details of the economic proposal on what has worked in Poland, Japan, Singapore, and South Korea.

China will "never surrender" in trade row
Beijing is running out of US imports to penalize because of the lopsided trade balance between the world's two largest economies. Trump said repeatedly that China " broke the deal " the two sides had been working toward over the past several months.

"All efforts to make the oppressor and the oppressed coexist are doomed to fail". USA officials see this as key to getting both the Palestinians and Israelis to the negotiating table to they can hash out specific details of future statehood.

"Attempts at promoting an economic normalisation of the Israeli occupation of Palestine will be rejected", Erekat said.

Shtayyeh reiterated Palestinians' core demands for a two-state peace deal with Israel, which include gaining full control of the occupied West Bank and Hamas-ruled Gaza, as well as East Jerusalem. The plan, which has been two years in the making, envisions large-scale investment and infrastructure work in the Palestinian territories. The Trump administration's focus on economy first "obscures the fact that the Palestinian economy is heavily shaped by Israel's occupation and settler colonial enterprise".

A spokesman for Israeli Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon said: "We have not yet received an invitation". "I feel bad for the Palestinian people".

The White House peace plan has been put together without participation from the Palestinians.

Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki told a recent meeting at the United Nations attended by Greenblatt that the United States seemed to be crafting a plan for a Palestinian surrender to Israel and insisted "there's no amount of money that can make it acceptable". It said the conference would not address the contentious political aspects of the Arab-Israeli conflict, such as final borders or the status of Jerusalem and right of return for Palestinian refugees.
