Move over 48MP cameras, Samsung brings new image sensor with 64MP resolution

ISOCELL Bright GW1

"Over the past few years, mobile phone cameras have become the main instrument for recording and sharing our everyday moments", Park Yong-in, executive vice president of sensor business at Samsung Electronics, said.

According to the manufacturer, using the 64MP sensor will result in "highly-detailed" images in bright settings.

Samsung on Thursday expanded its 0.8-micrometer (μm) image sensor lineup with the introduction of two new components, the 64-megapixel ISOCELL Bright GW1 and the 48-megapixel ISOCELL Bright GM2. The sensor is capable of merging four nearby pixels for better light sensitivity.

Samsung Electronics says no anticipated shipping date yet for Galaxy Fold
More interesting than that bit of non-news sent out by Samsung is that the company is allowing people to cancel their pre-orders. The email was necessary under United States regulations that require customers be contacted if their pre-order is in any doubt.

But while it may have an incredibly high pixel count, it still retains a 0.8μm pixel size, which is 0.2μm smaller than the Samsung S10 5G wide angle camera.

With more pixels and advanced pixel technologies, Samsung ISOCELL Bright GW1 and GM2 will bring a new level of photography to today's sleekest mobile devices that will enhance and help change the way we record our daily lives. Regular image camera sensors are in the range of 60-decibels (dB). If the claims by Samsung are correct, then any phone using the ISOCELL GW1, would be the new dynamic range leader in camera and imaging. Naturally, it features pixel-merging Tetracell technology just like other high-resolution ISOCELL sensors as well as Samsung's remosaic algorithm. Samsung however also is able to support a re-mosaic algorithm to make full 64MP resolution images in bright conditions.

The sensors also feature Dual Conversion Gain, which allows the sensor to take in light information in bright conditions up to its saturation point. Both these smartphone camera sensors are now under the "sampling" process and are scheduled for mass production in the latter half of the year. Both the seensors - GW1 and GM2 come with support for Super PD which is a high-performance phase detection auto-focus technology.
