Treasury Department To Congress On Request For Trump's Taxes: Go Shove It

Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin formally refused to cough up President Trump's tax returns to Democrats on the House Ways and Means Committee on Monday.

"In reliance on the advice of the Department of Justice, I have determined that the Committee's request lacks a legitimate legislative objective, and pursuant to section 6103, the Department is therefore not authorized to disclose the requested returns and return information", Mnuchin wrote in a letter to House Ways and Means Committee Chair Richard Neal (D-MA).

-Rep. Lloyd DoggettHouse Ways and Means Chairman Richard Neal (D-Mass.) "has no choice but to subpoena Trump's personal and business tax returns and, if the stonewalling continues, hold Secretary Mnuchin in contempt of Congress for illegally shielding the returns", the groups said.

But in a letter to the legal counsel of the Treasury Department, William Consovoy, the president's attorney, outlined the legal groundwork for why it would be a crime to comply with the request, detailing a battery of court precedents protecting Trump's right to keep his tax returns private.

He said the Justice Department plans to make public its legal reasoning in finding that Mnuchin didn't have to furnish the requests.

The move, which was expected, is sure to set in motion a legal battle over Trump's tax returns.

"We are under audit, despite what people said, and working that out", Trump told reporters at the White House. Mnuchin's announcement on Monday appears to be his final decision in the matter, though he has hinted for weeks that he would not allow the release. "If Trump once again faces only Republican silence and Democratic timidity, he will continue to erode our democracy by assuming more and more power".

Trump asks why ‘radical left wing media’ are allowed on Twitter, Facebook
The company believes that in this case, it believes that the best option is to remove these people from its platform. Then he suggested he likes the idea of some social media bans - if they affected the sources he can't stand.

The IRS tax returns issue dates back well before he was in office.

Both developments put the two oversight committees on a course leading to federal court action to obtain the documents, as the Trump administration escalated its push to block multiple probes by the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives.

A statement from the Department of the Treasury said that they are examining the tax returns of the president as with previous administrations.

Other Democrats on the panel were less restrained.

A Committee spokeswoman did not respond to Newsweek's questions Monday about what - if any - legal action that meant. He concluded that the Treasury Department is "not authorized to disclose the requested returns and return information".

"Is that all? Usually, it's 10", Trump said.
