Mississippi River Breaks 1993 Flood Record West of Chicago

Firefighters check for people trapped in downtown Davenport on Tuesday after a barrier failed sending the Mississippi River into the streets

The National Weather Service's flood warning for much of the area will last through the weekend and, for some, into next week.

Levels rose 7.7 feet (2.3 meters) above flood stage as of 8 a.m. local time, the National Weather Service said.

- A disaster proclamation has been issued by Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker for 34 counties along the MS and Illinois rivers due to flooding. "The Quad Cities has an unsinkable spirit that the deepest flood waters will never extinguish, and, like its baseball team, this community will never give up and never give in - even in the most challenging of circumstances".

Around 6 p.m. Thursday, a river gauge at Rock Island on the south side of Davenport reached 22.7 feet.

On April 30, the temporary barriers lining the streets in Davenport, Iowa broke. "With the river level here just about cresting, we're hopeful that we don't have to".

Valencia condemns Nazi, monkey gestures by fans at Arsenal
The chances continued to come for Arsenal's front two as Aubameyang volleyed into the ground and over just before the break. Arsenal had conceded nine goals in their last three Premier League games and it was easy to see why in a terrible opening.

The surging MS also was causing problems in West Alton, where the town's 500 or so residents were under a voluntary evacuation.

West Alton Emergency Management Director Gary Machens and friends were busy moving farm equipment to higher ground.

"The longer we can go without rain, the quicker the waters will recede", she said. "It's part of living in a flood plain". The flooding situation across the region is proving to be deadly.

Officials said Champ Clark Bridge at Louisiana could also be forced to close if the water gets too high, and several roads along the river have already closed on both sides of the Mississippi. More heavy rain through Friday morning raised concerns about additional flash flooding.
