Mueller report: Congress mulls next step on obstruction question

Robert Mueller

Mueller's probe, whose report was released in its entirety on 18 April, has failed to discover any evidence of collusion between Trump's campaign and Russian Federation, though some of the USA president's critics appear unconvinced by these findings.

The president said Wall Street Journal writer Kimberley Strassel "should get the Pulitzer" for her reporting on the origins of the investigation. In one striking scene, Mueller recounts how Trump called McGahn twice at home and directed him to set Mueller's firing in motion. The legal findings have provided good news for the president, but he will still face the judgment from voters in November 2020 about what they want of and expect from a president.

It's now up to Congress to decide what to do with special counsel Robert Mueller's findings about President Donald Trump. "Did I say the word "fire"?" the president asked, according to the report.

Barr on Thursday said he would make available to a bipartisan group of leaders from several Congressional committees a version of the report with all redactions removed except those relating to grand-jury information that can not by law be shared.

The White House says President Donald Trump played golf Friday with conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh and a couple of unidentified friends.

Mr Mueller investigated whether Russia's Internet Research Agency (IRA) was exploiting political divisions in the United States on the request of Mr Trump.

"The Mueller report indicates that Trump was not colluding with Russian Federation".

Whether that's enough to sway Trump's supporters remains unknown.

Others in the administration, including Vice President Mike Pence, also denied it. Flynn resigned when the truth became evident. "The business of government can move on", he said.

In a way, the Mueller report is the modern equivalent of the Zapruder film but with a much smaller audience and probably less staying power: It's open to interpretation. While newsrooms across the country digested the report, the White House guests, already seated waiting for the president to arrive, were entertained by the U.S. Marine Band. Sanders said on ABC Friday that her statement was "a slip of the tongue".

The official also said Mueller had the choice to either recommend charges against Trump or not, and he had decided against it. Mueller ultimately chose to hand over the matter to the attorney general, who concluded there was no case for obstruction.

Levin said Mueller likely knew that left-leaning news networks such as CNN and MSNBC would obsess over it, insisting that was why it was written.

"There's many parts of it that are disturbing, and we continue to digest it", Ferguson said.

Mueller's job as special counsel was at risk several times, as Trump sought to have him dismissed. I could have fired everyone, including Mueller, if I wanted.

After noting that he has personally made a point of trying to debate people with different views on the collusion story in order to challenge his own premises, Greenwald turned to the troubling trend he's noticed in media circles post-Mueller report: the attempt to conflate collusion and obstruction in order to declare false victory. But many were nervous about how Trump would react to their testimony and whether it would damage their relationships with him.

The demand for the full report and underlying evidence to be seen by the full House Judiciary Committee goes beyond that.

"If you listen to the media discourse, outside of a few circles, they've just put collusion and conspiracy and all of those conspiracy theories they've spent the last three years endorsing, just flushed it down the toilet like they don't event exist and just seamlessly shifted to obstruction", he said.
