London Climate Activists Chain Themselves to Jeremy Corbyn's Home

Climate change protesters are demanding a meeting with the Government

Police have arrested more than 300 people since Monday during protests by Extinction Rebellion.

Campaigners want governments to declare a climate and ecological emergency, reduce greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2025, halt biodiversity loss and be led by new "citizens' assemblies on climate and ecological justice".

Environmental activists in the United Kingdom took their protest to Heathrow Airport on Friday after days of demonstrations caused road closures and transport chaos across London. She told reporters she had been inspired to join after watching the movement over the last week, Britain's Press Association reported.

Speaking from Waterloo Bridge, Dr Gail Bradbrook, a cofounder of the XR group, said demonstrators would continue to act despite the first people being charged over the disruption.

"The airport is part of our national infrastructure and we will not allow the illegal activities of protesters to cause further disruption and misery to thousands of travellers", it said in a statement.

"Targeting public transport in this way would only damage the cause of all of us who want to tackle climate change, as well as risking Londoners' safety".

Yet only a small number, estimated to be less than 20 - and all of which Extinction Rebellion claims were under the age of 17 years old - made it out to the airport Friday.

Police surround environmental protestors near Heathrow Airport in London on Friday.

Several hours later, shortly before 5.30pm, after protesters were removed from the boat, the Metropolitan Police said arrest numbers for the day had reached 106, bringing the total since Monday to 682.

Disrupting the services of an airport that could endanger the safe operation or safety of passengers and staff is a crime.

The Met said the protests are putting a strain on policing in the capital with officers diverted away from "core local duties".

Earlier today, three protesters were remanded in custody until 16 May after pleading not guilty to charges of obstructing the railway following a demonstration at Canary Wharf station yesterday.

She said: "I absolutely wanted to be arrested on my 60th birthday but I didn't quite manage that".

Protesters block traffic on London's Oxford Circus, on April 18, 2019.
