(Vitisak Payalaw) Workers from the Chevron Thailand Exploration and Production Ltd. oil rig rescued a dog swimming 137 miles offshore in the Gulf of Thailand on Friday.

The dog, named Boonrod - a Thai word which roughly translates to "the saved one" - was brought to shore for a health check after being found dehydrated and hungry by workers on an oil rig on Friday.

"I thought that if we didn't move quickly, I would not be able to help him, If he lost his grip, it would be very hard to help him, his eyes were so sad".

The workers don't know how the dog ended up in the water so far from the coast, speculating that he may have fallen from a boat, Payalaw said.

Cold and shivering, the plucky canine was nicknamed Boonrod by his rescuers - Thai for "survivor from karma". As a parting gift, the workers gave the dog the name Boonrod, which "the dog rescued by merit", reports ABC News.

"If he lost his grip, it would be very hard to help him", Payalaw told CNN.

The exhausted animal was found at sea in the Gulf of Thailand last week, according to the Bangkok Post, after workers saw him swim toward the platform.

She was brought to a vet in Songkhla, Thailand on Monday.

As the dog settled at the rusty metal bars of the rig, the men fished it to safety using a rope.

He said they were lucky to spot it because if there had been waves it probably would not have been visible.

Vitisak also said on his Facebook page that if the dog was unclaimed, he would like to take it home to live with him in northeast Thailand.

Payalaw said Boonrod got naps and food, which started him regaining nourishment by the time they got him to dry land.
