Former Massachusetts governor Weld launches GOP primary bid

Bill Weld is challenging Trump for GOP nomination in 2020

Former Governor of Massachusetts Bill Weld announced today he is running for president against Donald Trump, hoping to secure the Republican nomination.

As for his actual policy positions, Weld's website is little more than an ask for money, but a video released by his campaign makes it clear that his primary qualification is not being Donald Trump. Welds chances are likely to get bad: According to surveys by the opinion research Institute Gallup Trump enjoys among supporters of the Republicans for months, the consent values on the order of 90 percent. The video shows clips of his television advertisement during his 1990 campaign for the office.

Weld said in an interview on CNN it would be a "political tragedy" to have six more years of what has come out of the White House in the last two years.

In Massachusetts, Bill Weld was a two-term governor, serving from 1991 to 1997.

Weld's nomination by President Bill Clinton to be USA ambassador to Mexico touched off a bitter public spat with then-Sen.

The video finishes with the slogan: "A Better America Starts Here".

"In these times of great political strife, when both major parties are entrenched in their "win at all cost" battles, the voices of the American people are being ignored and our nation is suffering", Weld said in statement.

Sitting presidents do not usually face internal challengers, and only a few have ever been denied renomination by their party.

Trump's campaign raised more than $30 million in the first quarter of 2019, it said on Sunday, far outpacing the sums raised by individual Democratic candidates during that period. He returned to the GOP in February, and soon after announced he was considering a challenge to Trump.

He said he is an economic conservative, adding that the United States "deserves to have some fiscal restraint and conservatism and cutting spending in Washington, DC".

Weld has not won a political race since being re-elected governor by a landslide in his heavily Democratic state in 1994.
