Democrats demand Trump tax returns by April 23

President Donald Trump waves after stepping off Marine One on the South Lawn of the White House Wednesday April 10 after returning from a trip to Texas

The Treasury Department has missed a deadline to deliver President Donald Trump's tax returns to the House Ways and Means Committee chairman.

"The Committee's request raises serious issues concerning the constitutional scope of congressional investigative authority, the legitimacy of the asserted legislative objective, and the constitutional rights of American citizens", Mnuchin writes.

But Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., said sanctuary cities showed contempt for the law, though he didn't know whether there were any legal concerns with transporting migrants to the locales.

Mnuchin reiterated his concern that Democrats' demand could lead the federal tax agency to become a tool for political disputes.

Mnuchin suggested in testimony to Congress last month that he would shield the privacy of Trump if the House Democrats requested his tax returns. The Internal Revenue Service is part of the Treasury Department.

'So, I think this would be a very bad approach.

Calling Neal's new deadline an "arbitrary" date, Mnuchin said the Democrats' request could set "enormous precedent in potentially weaponizing the IRS".

Five key talking points from the Chinese Grand Prix
Wolff has always been clear that his drivers are free to race as long as it is not at the cost of the team's overall result. He was later given the all-clear, but missed qualifying because his ruined vehicle could not be fixed in time.

It actually could make it more hard for Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers to arrest people facing deportation because sanctuary cities do not work with ICE. But again I would just emphasize this is a decision that has enormous precedence in potentially weaponizing the IRS. It's another early step in a battle between the Trump administration and congressional Democrats over access to Trump's business and financial dealings, with the dispute likely to end up in court. Others worry it would actually give migrants an incentive to come to the U.S. "I've had some problems with some of her other remarks, but not with that one".

"I will follow the law", Mnuchin told the cable network, adding that he would also review related "constitutional issues" carefully.

Oakland Mayor Libby Shaaf responded to Trump with a tweet saying, "It's time to stop fanning hate and division". Now, the president's lawyers are telling the firm that there could be consequences if they comply with a subpoena from the Democrat-controlled body that expected to be issued on Monday.

The request Massachusetts Rep. Richard Neal, who directs on the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee, is the first such requirement for a sitting president's tax advice in 45 decades.

Nadler said on CNN's "State of the Union" Sunday that whistleblowers told the Judiciary Committee "several weeks ago" that Miller had pushed the plan at DHS to release undocumented migrants into the so-called sanctuary cities - including the San Francisco district of Speaker Nancy Pelosi - to retaliate against Trump's political rivals who oppose his immigration policy.

The back-and-forth is just the beginning of a fight that has always been anticipated to weave its way through the courts.

Neal asked the IRS last Wednesday to turn over six years of Trump's tax returns within a week. But Republicans have dismissed his request as political and unprecedented.
