Five key talking points from the Chinese Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton has won the 1,000th Formula One race the Chinese Grand Prix

Valtteri Bottas blames a painted white line for the wheel-spin that compromised his start and effectively handed victory to teammate Lewis Hamilton today.

He was later given the all-clear, but missed qualifying because his ruined vehicle could not be fixed in time.

The team had said they would favour Vettel in 50-50 situations and clearly adjudged this to be a case in point and that they genuinely believed he could go quicker.

Both Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton lock out the front row for the Chinese Grand Prix on Sunday, with championship leader Bottas capturing pole position ahead of his team-mate.

Alex Albon started from the pits after a crash in FP3 meant he had to sit out qualifying. "Then it was a bit hard for me to find a rhythm", Vettel said.

Mercedes AMG Petronas team boss Toto Wolff says it's great to see both Silver Arrow cars to start the front row for Formula 1's 1000th Grand Prix in Shanghai, China. "I was initially close but obviously when you are behind, you are sliding a bit more, overheating the tyres a bit more".

"It was not to give advantage to a driver over the other, it was really as a team to try whatever we could in the early stages of the race".

"I would have preferred to have spun to the left side of the track, but the auto went to the right and I hit the wall".

Bottas, who leads the world championship by a point ahead of title-holder Hamilton after two races, scorched to a best time of one minute 31.547 seconds.

"It's not going to be easy, but I think we have the pace to make a few overtakes and hopefully get some more points".

Criticism mounts of Trump pick for U.S. Federal Reserve
The president has already said he plans to unveil yet another conservative secretary, Stephen Moore , for a vacancy on the board. Neither nomination has been formally sent to the Senate but Trump has said he will put their names forward.

Wolff has always been clear that his drivers are free to race as long as it is not at the cost of the team's overall result.

Australian Daniel Ricciardo finished seventh, earning his first points of the 2019 Formula One season, but Renault teammate Nico Hulkenberg didn't finish.

Mercedes are starting to look like a dominant force in a season in which Ferrari had suggested they would be quicker on the back of pre-season testing.

Bottas slotted into second place and their positions remained unchanged through to the chequered flag.

His Honda-powered team won in China a year ago, when they used Renault engines, with Ricciardo.

Bottas acknowledged he was done in by his slow start, with Hamilton racing ahead out of the first turn.

Hamilton was second fastest in the morning but struggled in the afternoon.

Fifth was Red Bull's Max Verstappen and sixth his team-mate Pierre Gasly. "But (the race was) tough because we tried to stick with them but just couldn't".

"Our auto looks really good in terms of downforce level, but we need to improve our straight-line speed". The opening lap saw the virtual safety vehicle (VSC) being deployed as Torro Rosso's Daniil Kvyat slid and bounced to crash into Carlos Sainz and Land Norrris' respective McLarens.
