Barr to testify before the Senate as Mueller's report looms

Donald Trump says he has not read 'total waste of time' Mueller report

U.S. Attorney General William Barr testifies on the Justice Department's budget proposal before a House Appropriations Subcommittee hearing on Capitol Hill in Washington, U.S., April 9, 2019.

WILLIAM BARR: Within a week, I will be in a position to release the report to the public.

Democratic leadership has been loathe to even discuss impeachment, and with Mueller's conclusions in his final report now public, as characterized by Barr, the chances of successfully removing Trump from office seem even more remote than they were before.

US Attorney General Bill Barr said Tuesday that his review of the Mueller Russia meddling investigation report is on schedule and he could release a redacted version by next week.

Barr also dismissed accusations that he was hasty to release the March 24 letter outlining the conclusions of the report.

Inspector General Michael Horowitz's report about that could be done in May or June, Barr said.

"It was started illegally".

British PM asks European Union to delay Brexit until June 30
However, three days of talks ended with no agreement and Labour accused May's Conservative government of not offering real change. The British Prime Minister has warned her cross-party talks with Labour on Brexit will mean "compromise on both sides".

Asked by Shaheen if he was suggesting "spying" had occurred, Barr replied "spying did occur". "I also think there may be, under appropriate safeguard, a way of people verifying that these categories were not abused, and at the end of the day, that the information is bona fide, privacy-related information and so forth, I'm willing to work with the Judiciary Committees on that".

Three Democrats on the Commerce, Justice and Science Appropriations Subcommittee are also members of the Senate Judiciary Committee where will Barr will testify on the Mueller report next month, including the top Judiciary Committee Democrat Sen.

Instead, the topic of his appearance is the Trump administration's proposed budget for the Justice Department for the fiscal year that begins in October.

Barr's investigation into the origins of the Russian Federation probe is separate from the long-running Office of Inspector General investigation into the Justice Department's handling of the Russian Federation investigation. "The question is whether it was predicated, adequately predicated", meaning whether it was legally justified.

"I haven't seen the referrals yet from Congressman Nunes, but obviously if there is a predicate for an investigation it will be conducted", Barr said. "I am saying I am concerned about it, and I am looking into it", he said. "There were dirty cops".

Barr isn't coming to Congress to talk about the report, but lawmakers are expected to ask about it anyway as they anxiously wait to see it in the coming days. While the four-page letter released by Barr said the special counsel did not find a criminal conspiracy between Russian Federation and Trump associates around the time of the 2016 election, it also said Mueller had presented evidence on both sides of the obstruction question and ultimately did not reach a conclusion on it.

Though he said the document will be redacted to withhold negative information about peripheral figures in the investigation, he said that would not apply to Trump, an officeholder and someone central to the probe. What Barr made clear today is that he wants to get a version of this report out so that people can see it.
