Army of lawyers prepares for Assange extradition battle

Julian Assange was bundled into a police van following his arrest at the Ecuadorian embassy

Wikileaks co-founder Julian Assange could face a renewed investigation into an allegation of rape in Sweden.

And so now Julian Assange of Wikileaks has been dragged out of his "sanctuary" in the London embassy of Ecuador for failing to clean his cat's litter box.

He sought refuge in the Knightsbridge embassy in 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden on sexual assault charges.

With Assange facing extradition proceedings and up to five years in federal prison on the United States computer hacking charge, shadow home secretary Diane Abbott told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that the UK should resist handing him over.

Mr Assange now faces the possibility of extradition to the USA, where he has been indicted on a conspiracy charge in connection with his interactions with Ms Manning.

Party leader Jeremy Corbyn said in a tweet that the U.S.is trying to extradite Assange because he exposed "evidence of atrocities in Iraq and Afghanistan".

Assange's mother, Christine Assange, also took to Twitter to defend her son, who she said was "sick and in pain from prolonged detention and torture".

It added that "justice has already been denied" in some parts of the investigation because of Assange's unavailability.

Extradition can be blocked to countries where the death penalty may be used, but human rights lawyer Karen Todner, who represented Mr McKinnon, said the USA was likely to give assurances that capital punishment would not be on the table in Assange's case.

Barr: I need to explore spying on the Trump campaign
Kardashian West visited the White House a year ago and convinced President Trump to commute Johnson's sentence. Barr modified his language, saying, "I want to make sure there was no unauthorized surveillance".

Asked if Trump's attitude towards WikiLeaks has changed, Pence said, "I think the president always - as you and the media do - always welcomes information".

Assange has always denied the allegations, which he feared would lead to him being extradited to the United States and facing trial over the leak of hundreds of thousands of secret U.S. military and diplomatic documents in 2010, which brought WikiLeaks to prominence.

If the country does decide to go ahead and submit its own extradition request, it would be up to United Kingdom courts to decide on whether it should take precedence over the expected petition from the US.

However, relations with his Ecuadoran hosts gradually soured and pro-US President Lenin Moreno on Thursday pulled his asylum, cancelled his citizenship and permitted British police to remove Assange.

Prosecutors in Sweden have since confirmed that, while the investigation has not been resumed, they are looking into the case.

His separate extradition case on charges of computer hacking is set to be next heard by video-link at Westminster Magistrates' Court on May 2.

If Assange loses in extradition court, he could appeal several times and ultimately try to have his case heard at the European Court of Human Rights - unless Britain has left the European Union by that time.

The country's ambassador to the UK, Jaime Marchan, said that in the time Assange had remained in the embassy he had been disrespectful, "continually a problem" and interfered in elections, politics and the internal affairs of other countries.
