Kirstjen Nielsen Out As DHS Secretary

DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen resigns after Sunday meeting

US Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, the front-line defender of the administration's controversial immigration policies, announced her resignation Sunday, in a move linked by observers to the president's anger over Central American border crossers.

Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Kevin McAleenan during a press conference in Washington on October 29, 2018.

Mr McAleenan is a longtime border official who is well-respected by members of Congress and within the administration.

Nielsen's relationship with Trump has always been said to be hard.

But what Trump doesn't tell you about there in those tweets making the announcement about Nielsen is that, if journalists who know the immigration beat are correct on this, he may be trying to position himself even further to the right, where he'd like to do some REALLY bad stuff. CNN's source, a "senior administration official, "notes President Trump's frustration with the current asylum laws, and his desire for individuals who work for the administration to block central American asylum seekers from entering the United States -- contrary to the laws on the books that allow their entry". Nielsen was seen as Kelly's protegee. Once Kelly left the White House past year, Nielsen's days appeared to be numbered.

News reports said Trump had belittled her in Cabinet meetings, unhappy with her efforts to tighten immigration.

But she was by the president's side on Friday in Calexico, California, as Mr. Trump pushed for a crackdown on illegal immigration and the need for a border wall. The agency's 22 components include TSA, Customs and Border Protection, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, FEMA, the Coast Guard, Secret Service, Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers, the National Protection and Programs Directorate, and the Science and Technology Directorate. The president recently vowed to cut all US foreign aid to Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador and has repeatedly threatened to close ports of entry to and from Mexico if the country's government does not do more to prevent migrants from the Northern Triangle from reaching the southern border. She was heckled in restaurants as the policy came under criticism.

Nielsen is just the latest of dozens of White House aides - from attorney general Jeff Sessions to press secretary Sean Spicer - to either resign or be sacked from a position in the Trump administration.
