First preliminary report of Ethiopian Airlines flight ET302 released

Ethiopian Airlines preliminary report Tom Foreman ATH

The is similar to what has been reported following the crash of Lion Air flight 610 in October a year ago, also involving a Boeing 737 Max.

He acknowledged for the first time that in certain risky situations, the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System, known as MCAS, can cause pilots to lose control of an aircraft in response to erroneous data from the plane's external sensors.

The lawsuit alleges, among other things, that "Blinded by its greed, Boeing haphazardly rushed the 737 Max 8 to market, with the knowledge and tacit approval of the United States Federal Aviation Administration ... while Boeing actively concealed the nature of the automated (flight control) system defects".

"Don't you think if Boeing knew what the fix was, we would have the fix by now?" he said.

Boeing has previously said when the 737 MAX returns to the skies with new software changes, it will be among the safest airplanes to ever fly.

Boeing anticipates the certification and implementation on the 737 MAX fleet worldwide in the coming weeks, he added.

According to Mr McAllister, "we will carefully review the AIB's preliminary report and will take any and all additional steps necessary to enhance the safety of our aircraft".

"The crew performed all the procedures repeatedly provided by the manufacturer but was not able to control the aircraft", Ethiopian Transport Minister Dagmawit Moges told reporters at a news conference earlier Thursday.

"We at Boeing are sorry for the lives lost in the recent 737 Max accidents", CEO Dennis Muilenburg said in a video.

The Ethiopian Airlines flight was headed for Nairobi on a clear morning on March 10 when it plummeted nose-first into a field outside Addis Ababa just minutes after take-off.

Separately, National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) chairman Robert Sumwalt told reporters that US investigators were given the raw data from Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 as soon as it was read in France last month.

Muilenburg also acknowledged, however, that an "erroneous activation" of Boeing's so-called Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS) had occurred.

Boeing faces logistical issues in finding places to park the growing number of grounded 737 MAX planes as well as being responsible for all their maintenance costs since it has been unable to deliver the jets to customers, two people briefed on the situation said.

Ethiopian Airlines Aviation Group says the preliminary report on the March 10 crash involving one of its aircraft has been released. A total of 346 people were killed on both flights.

Chicago-based Boeing, which is also the target of lawsuits over the October 29 Indonesia crash, has been working on a software fix and new training guidelines for the Max.

In the statement, Muilenburg went on to discuss the preliminary report of the Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 accident investigation.

They asked to turn back, but it was too late. Boeing's procedures instruct pilots to leave the MCAS disconnected and continue flying manually for the rest of the flight.
