US House Panel Subpoenas Former White House Security Clearance Chief

A uniformed Secret Service officer sends guard outside the White House

Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings, a Maryland Democrat, said after the vote that he wants to talk to Kline about the decisions to overrule career officials who had rejected dozens of White House security clearances.

Republicans accused House Oversight Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings, D-Md., of cherry-picking excerpts from Newbold's testimony to justify another partisan investigation into the Trump White House.

Newbold told the committee that the recommendations for denial were for serious questions involving foreign influence, conflicts of interest, personal conduct issues, financial problems, drug use, and criminal acts.

"I would not be doing a service to myself, my country, or my children if I sat back knowing that the issues that we have could impact national security", his letter quoted Newbold as telling his committee.

Kushner, President Trump's senior adviser and son-in-law, worked at the White House for over a year on an interim security clearance. He says he plans to issue subpoenas to White House officials as part of the probe. Yahoo News reported Monday that President Trump's daughter Ivanka and her husband, Jared Kushner, are among the officials involved.

She said she was concerned that many of her determinations that employees were ineligible for security clearances had been overturned outside of the normal process.

Ivanka told ABC News earlier this year that her father played no role in either her or Kushner receiving clearances.

In his decision, he "failed to address all of the disqualifying concerns listed by Ms. Newbold and the first-line adjudicator", according to a committee summary of her response.

Republican members of the House Oversight Committee on Monday afternoon responded to the concerns of a security clearance whistleblower by saying she testified that "only 4-5" of the "at least 25 people" mentioned posed potentially "very serious" problems.

Kushner had said of Trump that the president wanted to stop offenders reoffending because "he thought it was good for public safety.that is something he did because he had a big heart". He has since left the White House for the Defense Department. And although Kushner had to make multiple changes to his security clearance application due to numerous errors and omissions, Kushner claims he did it by the book.

Ned Price, a former Central Intelligence Agency analyst who served as spokesman for the National Security Council under former President Barack Obama, said he was not aware of anything similar happening during his time in the White House.

There was "no resolution" on her many complaints, "And I feel that right now this is the last hope to really bring the integrity back into our office".

Asked about the whistleblower's assertions, Kushner said in an interview on Fox News Channel that he had complied with various investigations.

Kushner has reportedly carried on chatting with the crown prince informally, offering advice on how to deal with the uproar, the New York Times has reported.

Senate Majority Leader Senator Mitch McConnell listens while US President Donald Trump speaks to reporters before a meeting with Senate Republicans on Capitol Hill March 26, 2019, in Washington, DC.

"Because what you have here are people who literally have the top secrets of the world ... and they have not been properly cleared, but even more risky than that ... the recommendations have gone out to say they shouldn't have", the Maryland Democrat told CNN.
