Third-party errors left over 540 million Facebook records exposed

Another Day Another Massive Facebook Data Leak

If you haven't already given Facebook your number, says Bobby Richter, who heads Consumer Reports' privacy and security testing, it's better to use an app such as Duo Mobile or Google Authenticator for two-factor authentication.

The second data set, sourced from a Facebook app called "At the Pool", was just a fraction of the size as the Cultura set, but contained more critical information, including plaintext Facebook passwords for over 22,000 users.

A Facebook spokesperson told TNW, "Once alerted to the issue, we worked with Amazon to take down the databases". "The passwords are presumably for the "At the Pool" app rather than for the user's Facebook account, but would put users at risk who have reused the same password across accounts", the firm said.

The discovery comes a little over a year after Facebook's Cambridge Analytica scandal, in which the data mining firm affiliated with Donald Trump got personal data on millions of Facebook users.

UpGuard writes that it was only when Bloomberg reached out to Facebook on April 3 that the data was finally secured. Meanwhile, the At the Pool database went offline while UpGuard was still investigating, possible because of a hosting lapse - the app shut down in 2014.

Facebook said the data had now been removed from the servers. "The data genie can not be put back in the bottle", reads the post.

Naaman Hart, Cloud Services Security Architect at Digital Guardian also comment on the breach and warned users that there is no such thing as free lunch referring to the free use of social media sites especially Facebook. UpGuard doesn't know how long they were exposed, as the database became inaccessible while the company was looking into it.

Security researchers have found out a huge security breach where hundreds of millions of Facebook user records have been found sitting on a public storage server.

According to UpGuard, they have sent two notification e-mails to Cultura Colectiva on January 10 and January 14, and have received no response.

"We are committed to working with the developers on our platform to protect people's data", Facebook's representative further added.

At the same time, Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg has embarked on a wholesale reimagining of the way users interact with each other on the social-networking site - and the data the company collects. However, neither sensitive nor private data, like emails or passwords, were amongst those because we do not have access to that kind of data, so we did not put our users' privacy and security at risk.
