Russell quickest in F1 testing as Brit swaps Williams for Mercedes

Mick Schumacher makes F1 debut with Ferrari

Mick Schumacher, son of seven times world champion Michael, made his Formula One test debut with Ferrari at the Bahrain circuit, where 15 years ago his father won the first grand prix in the Middle East. Of more importance, however, was getting another day of F1 experience as the Ferrari Driver Academy assesses his potential to make the step from Formula 2 to F1 next year.

The 20-year-old, son of F1 legend Michael, clocked the second-fastest time in his first drive in an F1 auto in Bahrain.

Schumacher put in 70 laps, fewer than any other driver who was in action across the entire day, and was sixth-fastest on the timesheets, albeit just two hundredths of a second down on his best time from the previous day, where running was affected by a rain storm.

"I really enjoyed today; it felt like home in the garage from the very first moment with a lot of people that know me since I was very young", Schumacher said after the test.

"The SF90 is incredible because of the power it has, but it is also smooth to drive, and that's why I enjoyed myself so much", said Schumacher.

Like many drivers on their first experience of an F1 auto, Schumacher said he had been wowed by the braking capabilities. I was feeling like I could even brake at the 50-meter board at turn 1, but obviously that's not possible.

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc defied team orders to stay behind teammate Sebastian Vettel in the early stages of the Bahrain Grand Prix on March 31, causing potentially huge problems for the team.For.

Lewis Hamilton, Sunday's race victor for Mercedes after Ferrari's Charles Leclerc suffered a late engine problem, was sixth fastest.

This time it was Mick Schumacher, the son of the most-decorated F1 driver of all time, Michael Schumacher, but he wasn't actually racing.

They were joined by double world champion Fernando Alonso, who left Formula One at the end of last season but was back in a McLaren testing tyres for Pirelli.

"The way he has developed in the last years, he deserves where he is now".

Ferrari chose Mick to participate during official F1 testing at the Bahrain International Circuit.

Michael Schumacher was severely injured in a skiing accident in 2013 from which he is still in recovery.

McLaren rookie Lando Norris set the third fastest test time, completing 22 laps. He has been clear he wants to help the team develop the vehicle and has not ruled out a return to F1.

The 21-year-old Mercedes-backed Briton, last year's Formula Two title victor, has languished at the rear of the field since he made his F1 debut with struggling former champions Williams in Australia last month.

Alonso retired from F1 in 2018 but remained as an ambassador and adviser to McLaren and was conducting the Pirelli tyre test in this capacity.

Note, Mick Schumacher has previously driven an F1 vehicle, though not during an official F1 event. Although the mileage was solid for an afternoon in the auto, his best lap was unspectacular with the 11th fastest time.

"The auto is incredible because of the power it has but it is also smooth to drive", he said. The vehicle has more grip, the auto is less draggy on the straights, the engine is a big step better as well.
