Third vote on May deal exposes splits among Tory Brexiters

Britain's opposition Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn offers an Arsenal soccer team jersey to European Union's chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier during a meeting at the EU Commission headquarters in Brussels Belgium

May's Brexit deal was rejected in the House of Commons by a record 230 votes in January and by 149 earlier this month.

Demonstrators blocked streets around the Houses of Parliament as lawmakers rejected Prime Minister Theresa May's EU withdrawal deal for a third time, on the day that the United Kingdom was originally meant to leave the European Union.

Lewis said the option of a customs union would be hard to pursue because it flew in the face of the Conservatives' pledges before the 2017 national election and did not respect the outcome of the 2016 Brexit referendum. "A "no-deal" scenario on 12 April is now a likely scenario". The EU has been preparing for this since December 2017 and is now fully prepared for a no-deal scenario at midnight on April 12, ' she said.

The main "Leave Means Leave" protest outside Parliament was attended by senior Brexiteers including former U.K. Independence Party leader Nigel Farage, who called Friday a "day of betrayal".

Lawmakers will vote on May's 585-page EU Withdrawal Agreement at a special sitting but not on the 26-page Political Declaration for future relations she negotiated at the same time, a maneuver which led to confusion among lawmakers.

However, she said that her government will push for an orderly Brexit after Parliament had rejected a no-deal Brexit and a fresh Brexit referendum.

She now faces having to explain what happens next, after EU Council President Donald Tusk called a Brussels summit for April 10.

After the vote, Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the opposition Labour Party, told the House of Commons that "it is the third time that the prime minister's agreement was rejected". Given the chance to break the stalemate in a series of "indicative votes" on alternate Brexit options on Wednesday, all eight proposals failed to attain a majority. Should she follow through on her televised address following the second meaningful vote defeat and ask the electorate to instruct its MPs to back the Brext deal - a referendum between remaining in the European Union or leaving on the basis of the negotiated deal - or should she accept that her government simply can not command majority support in the Commons for the defining policy of her premiership and trigger the process for an early general election?

On the day that Britain was meant to have left the European Union, thousands also gathered in Westminster to demand MPs deliver the result of the 2016 referendum.

But others refused, including May's Northern Irish allies, the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), which says planned arrangements for the Irish border after Brexit are unacceptable.

"The choice now is between the risk of being held in the backstop by the European Union for a period, without being able to control our exit, and on the other hand a significant risk of losing Brexit altogether", he said.

"I fear we are reaching the limits of this process in this House", May told parliament after the defeat.

Britain now has until April 12 to tell the European Union what it plans to do next.

"We were told over a 100 times by a British prime minister that we would be leaving on the 29th of March, 2019", she said.

To hold another one would represent a big risk, but bookmakers Betfair say an election before Brexit takes place is odds on.

The House of Commons will vote on a new motion on the Brexit withdrawal agreement tomorrow (Friday, March 29), the leader of the house - Andrea Leadsom - confirmed this evening.

Police said two people were held on suspicion of assault, one for being drunk and disorderly and another for assaulting a police officer. "Not at an indeterminate date in the future, but now, so that we can decide the future of this country through a general election". "She must then bow out, for the sake of Brexit, for her party and for democracy itself", the newspaper said in an editorial column. "This leaves only the other route, which is for the British to make clear what they want before April 12".
