Trump threatens to close USA border with Mexico next week

Trump Publicly Thanks Fox News Host Jeanine Pirro, Says He Hopes She’ll Be ‘Back Soon’

President Donald Trump threatened on Friday to close the US border with Mexico next week, potentially disrupting millions of legal border crossings and billions of dollars in trade if Mexico does not stop immigrants from reaching the United States.

Trump blamed Mexico for a growing flow of "illegals" entering the United States and cited two large migrant caravans making their way toward the US border.

The Border Patrol says the number of immigrant families traveling to the U.S.is now so high that the agency is immediately letting some go instead of transferring them to Immigration and Customs Enforcement for release.

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said on Thursday that tackling illegal immigration is an issue chiefly for the United States and the Central American countries to address.

"Mexico is doing NOTHING to help stop the flow of illegal immigrants to our Country", he tweeted.

Mr. Trump has threatened to shut off the border before.

Border agents are on track to make roughly 100,000 apprehensions at the southern border this month.

McAleenan said, "And within that group - thousands of criminals, smugglers, gang members and public safety threats that we're sworn to protect this country from". But the official said they need the manpower elsewhere to babysit the surge of children and families rushing for the US border.

Hundreds of migrants are being held in a chain-link enclosure in El Paso, Texas, as the number of families crossing the U.S. -Mexico border in the city overwhelms U.S. Border Patrol facilities, the agency said on Thursday.

Trump has threatened to close the border before but did not follow through.

As immigration advocates sound the alarm over "inhumane" conditions for asylum seekers who have been forced to wait under an overpass outside a Border Patrol station in El Paso, Texas, some activists have started to draw comparisons between the holding site and "concentration camps". As such, many tried to come back again, and Border Patrol counted news arrests of the same individual multiple times.

Attorneys are not standing by at ports of entry to greet and coach asylum-seekers as they enter the United States, let alone in remote borderlands, where USA authorities report a spike in crossings. The department argues those policy changes would stop families from trying to enter the U.S.

Pirro has always been one of Trump's most avid media supporters, and the president strongly advocated for her return, tweeting earlier this month that Fox News should "bring back" the anchor.

As The Journal notes, Del Rio Sector prosecutions initially increased during the Bush administration - the 43rd president oversaw border agents who made about 68,000 arrests in the Sector during the federal government's fiscal year 2005.

"It could be a couple of hours, it could be more than that, it could be overnight, I can't tell you, it's just too many people for me to tell you an exact time or time frame", Cordero said.

Trump has declared a national emergency to justify redirecting money earmarked for the military to pay for its construction.
