Boeing 737 plane crash: Findings out on Ethiopian Airlines disaster | Daily Star

Boeing employees are said to be devastated by the two crashes and the last few weeks within the company have been described as "heart wrenching".

It is unclear how long it may take the FAA and other worldwide regulators to decide when to allow the 737 MAX to resume flying, but officials first want details from the preliminary findings of the Ethiopian crash.

The crashes have also heightened scrutiny of the certification and pilot training for the latest model of Boeing Co's best-selling workhorse narrowbody, now grounded globally.

Data pulled from the Ethiopian Airlines flight recorder suggests the so-called MCAS system, which pushes the nose of the jet downwards, had been activated before the jet ploughed into a field outside Addis Ababa on March 10, the people said, speaking on condition of anonymity ahead of an interim official report.

These are the first details to emerge since Ethiopian investigators shared the fatal flight's black box data with global aviation experts earlier this week.

US and European regulators knew at least two years before the Indonesian crash that the usual method for controlling the 737 MAX's nose angle might not work in conditions similar to those in two recent disasters, Reuters reported on Friday, citing a document.

Boeing, which this week unveiled a fix to the much-maligned system, and the FAA have not commented about the preliminary finding, which people briefed on the matter told the Journal is subject to revisions. USA government air-safety experts have been analyzing details gathered from Ethiopian investigators for the past few days, according to one of the people.

Boeing gathered hundreds of pilots and reporters to unveil the changes to the MCAS stall prevention system, which has been implicated in the crashes in Ethiopia and Indonesia, as part of a charm offensive to restore the company's reputation.

It followed an October crash of a 737 MAX operated by Indonesia's Lion Air, which plunged into the Java Sea after takeoff from Jakarta, killing 189. The finding doesn't show any other equipment failure associated with the crash.

TUI, which has 15 737 MAXs representing 10 percent of its fleet, said extra costs would include replacement aircraft, higher fuel costs, other disruption and negative trading impact, sending its shares down by around 10 percent. They were essentially trying to see if on-the-ground evidence was consistent with the detailed technical picture gleaned from the black box. The suit, believed to be the first from the disaster, alleged that Boeing had defectively designed the jet's automated flight system.

The information was presented Thursday to United States authorities, including the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the source said.

Sinnett said making the software updates to each plane will take about an hour and will begin immediately.

Boeing on Wednesday said software changes to MCAS would provide additional layers of protection, including making it impossible for the system to keep the flight crew from counteracting it.

On Thursday, it was revealed Boeing is being sued by the family of one of the passengers onboard the Ethiopian Airlines crash.
