Boeing 737 Max makes emergency landing in Orlando

Southwest 737 Max 8

Richard Blumenthal of CT, in a March 19th letter to the Transportation Department's Inspector-General. He said the FAA has not received Boeing's completed software improvements.

Earlier this month, President Donald Trump issued an emergency order to ground all Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft in the US after one of the planes, operated by Ethiopian Airlines, crashed shortly after takeoff and left 157 people dead.

America's standing as the model for aviation-safety regulation will be on trial as congressional hearings begin into the Federal Aviation Administration's oversight of Boeing before and after two deadly crashes of its bestselling airliner.

The crashed plane had a similar malfunction the day before, which the crew solved.

The plane will now be moved to Southwest's Orlando maintenance facility for a review, the airline said.

Southwest Airlines, the operator of the flight, announced that the plane quickly and successfully made an emergency landing after "a performance issue with one of the engines shortly after takeoff".

"However, we have confidence in Boeing airplanes and we are sure that they will resolve the issue which is now under investigation".

Investigators have not yet determined the cause of the accidents.

"All those involved have had to deal with unimaginable pain", Muilenburg said.

A Wednesday press conference from Boeing briefed reporters on software changes to the 737 MAX. Both flights used the Boeing 737 Max 8.

Boeing has been working on a software upgrade for an anti-stall system and more pilot controls on its fastest-selling jetliner.

The New York Times reported Monday that pilots from five airlines tested current and updated software on a Boeing flight simulator.

Ethiopian Airlines flight ET-302 crashed on 10 March, killing all on board.

Also in prepared testimony, the acting FAA head defended his agency's certification of the 737 MAX and its initial resistance to ground the planes until all other major aviation regulators around the world had done so.

In addition, Boeing also said it plans to implement enhanced pilot training.

Shortly after Chao spoke, Boeing confirmed it will make standard a safety feature on its now grounded 737 MAX that might have warned earlier of problems that possibly played a role in the crashes of Ethiopian and Indonesian planes that killed nearly 350 people.

The Transportation Department watchdog has previously raised questions about the FAA's certification of Boeing planes and the seemingly close relationship between some agency managers and Boeing. Airlines have warned travellers about possible disruptions and the likely need to rebook for passengers who were originally scheduled to be on a Max jet.

According to the Federal Aviation Authorities (FAA), the plane which was not carrying passengers returned to Orlando airport shortly after take off after the crew reported its engine had failed. "We write to request answers about Boeing's ongoing practice of charging airlines extra for safety-critical systems important to the operation of an aircraft". However, last week Garuda Indonesia became the first airline to publicly cancel its Max orders.
