New Zealand PM announces royal commission inquiry into Christchurch attack

New Zealand

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced on Monday a royal commission, a powerful form of public inquiry, into the events leading up to a March 15 attack on two mosques in Christchurch that killed 50 people.

She said the Cabinet agreed Monday a royal commission of inquiry "will look at what could have or should have been done to prevent the attack".

The body of Syed Areeb, one of the nine Pakistanis killed in the Christchurch attack, was handed over to his heirs at Karachi airport on Monday, ARY News reported.

"They came running. they were crying, they were in tears", he said of his neighbors when they found out that Husna had died.

It would also include the role of social media and the suspect's ability to obtain a weapon, Ardern said.

"Thank you PM @jacindaardern and New Zealand for your honest empathy and support that has won the respect of 1.5 billion Muslims after the terrorist attack that shook the Muslim community around the world". We see ourselves as peaceful and inclusive, the act has been so counter to that, but the response ... that's New Zealand. Boztas says it was handsome to see what the community had put together to show they care and that "we are all one".

The prime minister has announced a national memorial service will be held on Friday, with thousands expected to turn out again in solidarity for the local Muslim community. "But they do not point it out in an attempt to blame, that is not the reason that it's raised".
