Suspected white supremacist charged with murder after New Zealand mosque shootings

Death toll rises to 50 as New Zealand mourns victims

Speaking at a press conference Saturday, New Zealand Police Commissioner Mike Bush said Tarrant was "not willing to be arrested".

New Zealand authorities said 34 people remain in hospital, being treated for injuries that Doctor Greg Robertson described ranging from severe, complex gunshot wounds to "relatively superficial soft tissue injuries".

Ardern said the alleged attacker, 28-year-old Australian Brenton Tarrant, would surely have killed even more people than the 49 worshippers he massacred in two mosques were it not for the policemen. One was later released without charge.

Of those killed in the massacre, 41 died at the Masjid Al Noor mosque on Deans Avenue in central Christchurch, seven were killed at the suburban Linwood Masjid Mosque, and one person died at Christchurch Hospital.

Queen Elizabeth II, who is New Zealand's head of state, said in a message to the country she was "deeply saddened by the appalling events in Christchurch" and sent condolences to families and friends of victims.

Facebook, Twitter and Google scrambled to take down the gunman's video, which was widely available on social media for hours after the bloodbath. Ardern said police recovered five guns at the scene - two semi-automatic weapons, two shotguns and a lever-action firearm.

Two other people were in custody and police said they were seeking to understand whether they were involved in any way. A 4-year-old girl at a children's hospital in Auckland was also listed as critical.

Authorities were working to find out how he had obtained the weapons and a license, and how he was able to enter the country to carry out the attack, she said. Prayers go to the victims and their families. "I said to him, 'Calm down, the police is here now, '" Khan recalled.

Tarrant had posted a jumbled 74-page anti-immigrant manifesto online before the attacks and apparently used a helmet-mounted camera to broadcast live video of the slaughter.

Garuda reconsiders order of 49 MAX airplanes from Boeing
U.S. lawmakers said the planes could be grounded for "weeks" to upgrade the software and install it in every plane. On Wednesday, President Trump reversed course and announced that all Boeing 737 Max 8 planes would be grounded.

Khaled Mustafa, a recent refugee from Syria, had also been killed at the Al Noor mosque, Syrian Solidarity New Zealand spokesman Ali Akil told news website Stuff.

The number of wounded also increased to 50, he said.

With 49 people killed in the mosque attacks, it was by far the deadliest shooting in modern New Zealand history.

Ahmed said that he was surprised to know of Brenton's involvement in the attacks in New Zealand.

He also livestreamed to the world in graphic detail his assault on the worshippers at Christchurch's Al Noor Mosque.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said New York City is providing extra security for Muslim community centres and mosques.

Arden used some of her strongest language yet about gun control, saying that laws need to change and "they will change".

U.S. President Donald Trump, who condemned the attack as a "horrible massacre", was praised by the accused gunman in a manifesto posted online as "a symbol of renewed white identity and common objective".

"We appear to primarily be dealing with one primary perpetrator, but we want to make sure that we don't take anything for granted in ensuring New Zealanders' safety", Prime Minister Ardern said.
