After the gunman had run back to his auto to get another gun, Aziz said he threw the credit card machine, ducking between the cars to avoid gunfire. A man inside the mosque followed the shooter as he left the mosque.

He said the gunman was cursing at him and yelled that he was going to kill them all.

"I've been to a lot of countries and this is one of the handsome ones", he said, adding that he had always thought New Zealand was peaceful.

"[Aziz] went after him ... and that's how we were saved".

Aziz threw the gun he was carrying at Tarrant's vehicle, smashing the window.

New Zealand has tried to tighten laws before but a strong gun lobby and culture of hunting has stymied efforts.

Almost 100 Muslim worshippers who had taken cover in the mosque as the rampage unfolded were left unharmed.

Aziz said when he came back to the mosque, everyone was frightened. When I went home last night, my wife told me all the neighbours, they sent flowers. cards, foods, cakes.

"We just request the bodies shouldn't be too long in the mosque because the bodies are still lying over there and eventually it will be too hard to wash the bodies and take to the burial and probably things will start deteriorating, that's the worry".

"I believe New Zealand will do it".

Mo, a volunteer who had flown in from Brisbane to wash the bodies, said the people who died in the mosques were classified as martyrs.

Under New Zealand's contempt rules, there are limits on what can be published about the suspect, to preserve his right to a fair trial.
