New Zealand PM Jacinda Ardern condemns Christchurch mosque shooting calls it 'darkest day'

One of the gunmen, who carried out shooting at two mosques in New Zealand's Christchurch city killing 49 people on Friday, has been identified as 28-year-old Australian citizen Brenton Tarrant.

"It is clear that this can now only be described as a terrorist attack, " Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said, noting that numerous victims could be migrants or refugees.

Police on Friday stepped up security around mosques across New York State in wake of the mass shootings that killed almost 50 people in New Zealand.

Police found multiple firearms at both locations, as well as two improvised explosive devices attached to a vehicle that were going to be detonated as part of the attack.

New Zealand prime minister Jacinda Ardern confirmed that a total of 49 people have been killed and at least 20 others had been seriously injured.

After the attacks, New Zealand Prime Minster Jacinda Arden addressed the public, describing Friday as "one of the darkest day in New Zealand".

There are now four individuals who have been apprehended, but three are connected to this attack and are now in custody, one of which has publicly stated that they were Australian born.
