Province to announce classroom cellphone ban

By Jessie Weisner

The Canadian Press wire service reports from sources that the government will announce a cellphone usage ban will be in place for the 2019-20 school year for all public schools.

Some boards have already grappled with curbing student cellphone use during the school day, including Toronto, which later opted to leave the decision up to teachers.

The reason is the claim that cell phones are a distraction in class, and without them students will focus on the lesson being taught.

Would you be for or against a cellphone ban in schools across Western New York?

The formal announcement of the ban is expected in the near future.

"By banning cellphone use that distracts from learning, we are helping students to focus on acquiring the foundational skills they need like reading, writing and math", she said. "We've got a lot of classrooms where students are actually provided with Chrome books and iPads and those kinds of things", said Fields.

Packers To Sign Safety Adrian Amos
Perry tallied a career-best 11 sacks in 2016 and seven in 2017, but he only registered one sack in nine games last season. Packers fans likely know quite well who Adrian Amos is, as he spent the past four seasons playing for the Chicago Bears .

The Peel District School Board policy states that students "will use devices responsibly" only after getting permission and direction from teachers.

"Beginning next school year, cellphones will no longer be allowed in the classroom unless they are required for educational purposes, health, and medical purposes, or to support special needs", says Thompson. The board also felt that a strict no-technology ban could potentially limit education opportunities.

The Tory government conducted education consultations a year ago, and while input on the sex-education curriculum dominated headlines, feedback was also gathered on a potential classroom cellphone ban.

However, surveys conducted by the Conservative government found that 97 percent of respondents favored a cellphone ban.

"Instead of empowering schools to create reasonable cell phone use policies, Ford is promising a province-wide ban that is impossible to enforce", Schreiner said in a statement. "I think the teacher should be in control of the technology and so the teacher should be bringing the technology to the classroom".

The mother, who has two children in elementary school, says that although we live in a world that relies on technology, there's a time and a place for cellphones. The improvements were largely seen among the students who were normally the lowest achieving.
