The Miami Dolphins have traded Ryan Tannehill to the Tennesse Titans. In exchange, the Dolphins will receive a fourth-round pick in 2020 and a seventh-round pick in 2019. Paying big-time money for a backup quarterback has proven to be a viable approach (see: the Eagles and Nick Foles) and it makes all the sense in the world for the Titans, a team with Marcus Mariota now positioned as its starter.
The Dolphins, meanwhile, are looking for a quarterback.
Tannehill's new contract is for $7 million for one season and is fully guaranteed. Miami, in the midst of a rebuild, couldn't justify those huge numbers for a player who clearly wasn't part of their long-term future. The Dolphins haven't really been linked to many quarterbacks in the upcoming 2019 NFL Draft, but that's largely a result of where they're picking. But they did get trade value out of a player they were set to release this offseason.
Tannehill's best season with the Dolphins might have come in 2016 when he helped the team earn a playoff spot and had career highs in completion percentage (67.1) and passer rating (93.5). He posted a 42-46 record over six seasons, while throwing for 20,434 yards and 123 touchdowns with 75 interceptions.
It was widely rumored that Tannehill, once expected to be the team's savior, would leave.
The injuries also sapped some of what made Tannehill an intriguing quarterback early in his career: athleticism, ability to make plays when they break down and a strong arm with precise accuracy.
