Bangladesh team escape in New Zealand mosque shooting; six killed

Police guard a mosque following the Christchurch terror attacks

"I don't they're in a mental state to play cricket at all".

"We are in touch with our counterparts at the New Zealand Cricket Council and we have asked them to enhance security around our team", Nizamuddin Chowdhury, the CEO of BCB told Reuters on Friday following the incident.

Bangladesh's strength and conditioning coach Mario Villavarayen said the players were shaken up.

Police say they have one person in custody but are unsure if there are other people.

As the players arrived at the ground they heard but did not see the shooting taking place.

The Bangladesh team, which was about to enter the mosque to offer prayers, escaped unscathed but the prevailing situation led to the authorities calling off the third and final Test match starting on Saturday. Later, the team went back to their hotel.

Several hundred people were inside and witnesses reported seeing at least four people on the ground and "blood everywhere", according to Radio New Zealand.

He said there could have been "more than hundreds" of shots that were fired from what he heard.

An unidentified gunman opened fire at a mosque in New Zealand's Christchurch city on Friday.

Cricket journalist Mohammad Isam has revealed the harrowing phone call he received from Bangladeshi player Tamim Iqbal during the Christchurch mosque shooting. He described the experience as "frightening".

One man who was inside the mosque told local media that there would normally be about 50 to 60 people worshipping inside the building.

The Masjid Al Noor in central Christchurch was filled with worshippers, when the attack happened, as was a second mosque in Linwood.

Soon after the attack, the New Zealand cricket body announced that the scheduled cricket match, which was to take place at the Hagle Oval, not very far from the site of the attack, was canceled.

Another witness told stuff.co.nz he was praying in the Deans Ave mosque when he heard shooting and saw his wife lying dead on the footpath outside when he fled. "I'm sure all of New Zealand will take a look at their approach".

New Zealand Cricket said all players and support staff were "safe and accounted for", and a Bangladesh team spokesman later said all players had returned to the team hotel. "Lots of police and ambulance have come, and they did not allow us to go in the mosque or to get close to it", he said. "Many of those affected will be members of our migrant communities - New Zealand is their home - they are us", added Ardern. "They are in awful and severe mental (distress), they're not feeling well". I'm new in Christchurch, I didn't know who to contact.

"They ran back through Hagley Park back to the Oval", he tweeted.
