Residents said seven children have been rescued from the wreckage of a building that collapsed in Nigeria's commercial capital of Lagos on Wednesday.

She added: "Do you know that even this morning, this house was shedding debris before it".

The governor added that numerous structures in the area would be demolished as they are not structurally fit.

A visit by the News Agency of Nigeria correspondent to the General Hospitals in Marina and Gbagada in Lagos, on Thursday, showed that some of the patients had been stabilised, while others were still being attended to.

Parents had told CNN on Wednesday that many buildings in the commercial hub in downtown Lagos were not safe. "This would not have happened if they had adhered to government's instruction".

Ibrahim Farinloye, a spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency's southwest region, said there was no immediate information on any casualties.

"My two friends who used to live in the building moved out only in November when their rent expired".

He said "at least 20 have been brought out" but did not say whether they were alive or dead. All we are trying to do is to scale up the rescue operation.

The tricyclist maintained the school's name is Ohen Nursery/Primary School and that it has been running in the neighbourhood for more than three years.

"Let the state government look for preventive measures, rather than spending money for evacuation, investigation and remediation after the calamities and damages have occurred", Mr Awobodu said.

A three-storey building, which had a school on its top floor, fell on Wednesday.

The governor of Lagos state, Akinwunmi Ambode, said the building had been earmarked for demolition and a nursery and primary school was being run illegally on one of its floors.

"Before the kids could be arranged from their classes, the building had collapsed".

Lagos Governor Akinwuni Ambode visited the site and offered condolences to bereaved families.

One of the protesters, a woman in her late forties who spoke in Yoruba, said the government should be sensitive to the plight of parents who are battling to save their last surviving child from the disaster.

They alleged that the collapsed building had been marked for demolition but government officials failed to carry out the demolition because the owner bribed them.

He called on the relevant agencies to undertake stress tests of buildings to ensure that the structures are not compromised. But we get resistance from landlords.
