Two More Daesh Brides Stripped of UK Citizenship Amid Begum’s Row

Shamima Begum was stripped of her British citizenship after fleeing the UK to join the Islamic State terror group in Syria aged 15

Then, four years later, Shamima Begum showed up in a refugee camp in Syria, pregnant and asking to return home.

A medical certificate pointed towards pneumonia as the cause of death, reported the BBC.

Found in a refugee camp in February, an unrepentant Begum sparked a debate in Britain and other European capitals as to whether a teenager with a jihadist fighter's child should be left in a war zone to fend for herself.

Former director of public prosecutions Lord Macdonald accused Mr Javid of "moral cowardice" and said his move risked creating a "more risky world where stateless individuals roam with no allegiance and the death of unprotected innocents, in this case a vulnerable British baby".

"The tragic death of Shamima Begum's baby, Jarrah, is a stain on the conscience of this government", Diane Abbott, the opposition home affairs spokeswoman said.

Interior minister Sajid Javid revoked her citizenship amid security fears, but has been criticised for not doing more to help her son.

He said: 'We have been looking at how we can get in touch with these children, how we can find a way to get them out.

Dal Babu, a former Metropolitan Police chief superintendent and friend of Ms Begum's family, told the BBC: "We've failed, as a country, to safeguard the child".

"It is possible the death of this baby boy and others could have been avoided", said the group's Syria response director, Sonia Khush.

Ms Begum was just 15 when she fled with her Bethnal Green Academy classmates Kadiza Sultana and Amira Abase, after telling her parents they were going out for the day.

"Any decisions to deprive individuals of their citizenship are based on all available evidence and not taken lightly", a spokesman added.

But the spokesperson added the UK Foreign Office "has consistently advised against travel to Syria" since 2011.

Two senior members of the government said on Saturday that the death was a tragedy but that the home secretary took the decision on grounds of national security.

However, ITV News Correspondent Emma Murphy - who is in Syria - reported that while the country has been locked in a civil war for the past nine years and "nowhere is particularly safe", she and her team had travelled "backwards and forwards" to the Al-Hol refugee camp on Sunday - the place where Jarrah was born. "This is callous and inhumane", tweeted Abbott.

Asked about the Iqbal sisters, British authorities told The Times they would not comment on individual cases. "I think it's shocking how the home secretary has treated this situation".

"The government will continue to do whatever we can to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism and traveling to unsafe conflict zones".

She had sought to return to Europe with her third child, who was born about three weeks ago.

"I just want forgiveness really, from the United Kingdom", she told the BBC's Middle East correspondent Quentin Sommerville last month.
