Trudeau: Mistakes made in SNC-Lavalin affair, no rules broken

Justin Trudeau regrets 'erosion of trust' over political scandal

"It's a website where Canadians can tell Justin Trudeau just that - lift the gag order on his former attorney general".

In this March 8, 2019, file photo, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is seen through a beveled pane of glass in a door as he takes part in a news conference in Iqaluit, Nunavut, Canada.

According to testimony by his former Attorney General Jody Wilson-Raybould, Canada's first indigenous woman to hold that position, she was pressured by the government to drop criminal proceedings against the influential Quebec-based SNC-Lavalin engineering company for allegedly bribing Gaddafi-era officials in Libya and allow it to settle out of court through a so-called "deferred prosecution agreement" that was added to the criminal code a year ago through the efforts of its lobbyists. "Even though it may apply", she was not suggesting that the word apply to either Wilson-Raybould or former Treasury Board president Jane Philpott.

"I have never raised partisan considerations" with former attorney general Wilson-Raybould, Trudeau added.

Trudeau said his team and everyone in his government has been focused on protecting jobs, and he stressed that "the rule of law remains fully intact".

And while Wilson-Raybould is being lauded in many quarters for her courage and integrity, unfortunately, as justice minister she was squarely behind Trudeau's socially liberal agenda.

"In Ms Wilson-Raybould's case, she did not come to me, and I wish she had".

Andrew Korybko is joined by Christopher C. Black, worldwide criminal lawyer with 20 years of experience in war crimes and global relations, and a commentator on global affairs.

Trudeau admitted, for the first time, that he asked Wilson-Raybould to "revisit" her decision on prosecuting SNC-Lavalin over allegations of corruption, but he insisted that he did not inappropriately pressure her to change her mind.

Federal Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer kept the heat turned way up on Justin Trudeau during a visit to Manitoba Friday.

'Erosion of trust': Justin Trudeau says mistakes were made in handling political crisis

She said Trudeau and top-level staffers "hounded" her over four months when she was justice minister in a "consistent and sustained effort to seek to politically interfere" in the prosecution of SNC-Lavalin, including "veiled threats" against her.

Trudeau, meanwhile, promised transparency while describing himself as a feminist who was also determined to right the wrongs against Canada's indigenous people.

Jody Wilson-Raybould says she was pressured in the criminal prosecution of engineering giant SNC-Lavalin.

Opposition MPs have called for an emergency session of the justice committee on Wednesday and Wilson-Raybould has previously said she would be willing to return to provide additional testimony.

"I am firmly convinced that nothing happened here beyond the normal operations of government", Butts said.

When Trudeau told her January 7 she was being moved from justice, "I stated I believed the reason was because of the SNC matter".

SNC-Lavalin, which employs some 9,000 people in Canada and tens of thousands overseas, is accused of bribing Libyan officials to get contracts between 2001 and 2011.

But Mr Trudeau said he and other officials felt she was still open to arguments on the issue because such an agreement would be possible until the last moments of a trial. Trudeau, 47, came to power in November 2015 promising more accountability and a greater number of women in the Cabinet.

The decision at issue whether to invite an organization to enter into negotiations for a remediation agreement clearly falls within the ambit of prosecutorial discretion and the nature of decisions that prosecutors are regularly called to make in criminal proceedings, she added.

I was clueless about Captain Marvel, but now I love her
She , however, hoped that there comes a time when a female director for a superhero film becomes a norm rather than an exception. In a corner, Captain Marvel's beeper (which she left with Nick Fury at the end of her movie) is beeping, until suddenly it's not.
