Begum left London aged 15 with two other schoolgirls to join Islamic State.

Shamima Begum was stripped of her citizenship on security grounds last month, leaving her in a detention camp in Syria where her baby died, the third of the 19-year-old's infant children to die since she travelled to Syria in 2015.

Ahmed Ali made the apology from a village in Bangladesh before he learned Begum's new baby has died in Syria after her citizenship was revoked by the British Government.

Late Friday, Tasnime Akunjee, the lawyer representing the Begum family, said on Twitter that he had also confirmed reports that the infant had died.

"It is against worldwide law to make someone stateless, and now an innocent child has died as a result of a British woman being stripped of her citizenship", she tweeted.

"Any baby dying is an absolute tragedy, and that was a British baby", the leader of parliament Andrea Leadsom told Reuters.

Since December, at least 100 people have died en route to the camp or shortly after arriving, mostly children under five, the IRC said.

Neighbouring Austria said on Wednesday it would not help repatriate any citizens who fought for ISIS and other militant groups, as countries across the West wrestle with how to deal with returning militants.

Conservative Party chairman Brandon Lewis defended Mr Javid, telling Today: "There is no question that the duty of a Home Secretary in this country is to keep British people safe".

In 2015, Begum left the United Kingdom and travelled to Syria with two friends.

But he added that Britons had been warned since 2011 not to travel to Syria because of the conflict there.

Blaming Javid for the baby's death, British journalist Ash Sarkar tweeted: "Whatever Shamima Begum may have done, her child was innocent and a British citizen".

Her request sparked national debate in Britain about what the government owed the young woman, who willingly joined the group as a minor and in media interviews seemed to show little remorse, even as she begged to be let back home.

In Begum's case, Javid had previously told British Parliament that "children should not suffer, so if a parent does lose their British citizenship, it does not affect the rights of their child".

Home Secretary Sajid Javid had earlier said he "would not hesitate" to prevent the return of those who joined terror organisations like the Islamic State.

Unconfirmed reports emerged on Friday that he had lost his life a month after being born in a Syrian refugee camp.

A British government spokesperson said the death was "tragic and deeply distressing".

In a move that drew much criticism across the political and public spectrum, Mr Javid then revoked the teenager's British citizenship.

Before it was confirmed the baby had died, Mr Javid said he had "nothing but sympathy" for the children that had been "dragged" into the situation in Syria.
