Democrats Planning Another Public Rebuke Of Rep. Ilhan Omar

Bernie Sanders and Ilhan Omar

A draft offered to news outlets, including The Associated Press, does not explicitly rebuke Omar, a Somali-American and one of two Muslim women in Congress. Ben Ray Lujan (D-NM) as lawmakers speak about the Voting Rights Enhancement Act, H.R. 4, on Capitol Hill on February 26, 2019 in Washington, DC.

Still, senior Democrats were unmistakably wary of dealing with Omar's habit of inflaming a divide in the party over U.S. -Israel relations.

Resolutions are all well and good, but Speaker Pelosi is clearly afraid to stand up to Rep. Omar if she continues to reward her with a plum spot on the Foreign Affairs Committee.

Democratic Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of NY and Ilhan Omar of Minnesota attend a press conference calling on Congress to cut funding for ICE and to defund border detention facilities, in Washington, D.C. on February 7.

Omar, a Minnesota Democrat, has apologized for previous comments about Israel, but she's not apologizing for the statement that reminded many members of Congress of a Jewish trope about having split loyalties. That effort passed 424-0, with two Republicans voting present and five lawmakers skipping the vote.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi holds the dog tag of kidnapped Israeli soldiers in a ceremony at the Knesset, April 1, 2007.

Omar wrote that President Trump and Republicans in Congress have been sharply critical of her and that they question her "Americanness" on a daily basis; the Minnesota representative said that her colleagues have been silent in the face of the attacks against her. An Islamophobic poster displayed at an event last week sponsored by the West Virginia Republican Party linked her to the September 11 terrorist attacks.

While this may be true of Pelosi, most Democrats, and maybe even Congress in general, it manifestly does not apply to Omar.

Mueller has since indicted Russian intelligence officers and made numerous charges against former associates of the president. Who is going around calling himself a democratic socialist for a long time, people like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Ocasio-Cortez wasn't alone in condemning the poster.

But their pleas fell on deaf ears, after Omar claimed last Thursday that pro-Israel Americans showed "allegiance to a foreign country".

But while Tlaib's long-running ties to genocidal Jew-haters, Holocaust deniers, and apologists for the Shiite supremacist terror group Hezbollah are now out in the public domain, it is Omar's tripling down on the infamous "dual loyalty" canard that is the immediate cause of the resolution's being brought to the House floor.

In Ocasio-Cortez, the breakout liberal star of the House freshman class, Omar has a powerful ally who is able to reach a wide audience on social media.

Ocasio-Cortez again dove into the fray, launching into another long thread expressing curiosity whether Vargas would "further explain his stance here that it's unacceptable to even *question* United States foreign policy".

According to critics, Omar's comments played into a long-standing attack that Jews can not be considered loyal citizens of their home countries - and they came after two previous occasions where Omar apologized for making comments with anti-Semitic overtones in the course of criticizing Israeli government policy. On Tuesday, Ocasio-Cortez said Omar "has demonstrated a willingness to listen+work w/impacted communities" and thus should not be subject to a "calling out" from fellow Democrats in the House. The latest text being circulated in the House does not mention Omar.

Bennett said that most Jewish Americans have an "allegiance to Israel and an allegiance to the Democratic Party" - and that Omar's remarks and those defending them put that allegiance in jeopardy.
