Chinese Embassy ‘utterly dissatisfied’ with Meng Wanzhou extradition, watching SNC-Lavalin

Canada has signed an extradition treaty with Washington. Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou, in a proceeding that promises to be long and politically explosive.

In January, the United States government presented a pair of federal indictments against Huawei and Meng personally on charges ranging from financial fraud to industrial espionage.

"There is sufficient evidence to be put before an extradition judge for decision", the statement said.

Trudeau sacked his ambassador to China for undermining that position by saying that Meng had a "strong" case against extradition and later adding that it would be "great for Canada" if the USA dropped the case. A Chinese court also sentenced a Canadian to death in a sudden retrial, overturning a 15-year prison term handed down earlier.

The Chinese Embassy in Canada said it was "utterly dissatisfied with and firmly opposes" the decision to allow the case to proceed.

In a statement, the Chinese Embassy in Canada called the extradition process "political persecution against a Chinese high-tech enterprise".

Meng has been released on bail pending the outcome of the hearings.

Border officers also questioned Meng and the claim alleges that the "specific nature of the questions" was informed by documentation or briefings from Canadian and/or American authorities familiar with the US charges facing Meng. Meng maintains her innocence and believes the USA prosecution and extradition constitute "an abuse of the processes of law", they said.

It means they have now formally started the extradition process. Beijing has already lodged stern representations (with Ottawa), China's Foreign Ministry's spokesman, Lu Kang stated.

TikTok app fined in US for illegally gathering children's data
In the FTC's complaint, officials claimed that TikTok operators violated the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act , or COPPA. Now, TikTok has surpassed the 500 million mark and has hit more than 1 billion downloads on both Android and iOS .

Meng's extradition case goes back to B.C. Supreme Court on Wednesday.

China, whose relations with Canada have deteriorated badly over the affair, denounced the decision and repeated previous demands for Meng's release.

Meng is the daughter of Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei.

Legal experts had predicted Ottawa would give the go-ahead, given the close judicial relationship between Canada and the United States.

The date of March 6 has been set for the court in Vancouver to determine when Meng's official extradition hearing will he held, which may not occur for months according to some reports.

It alleges that RCMP officers and/or representatives from the U.S. Department of Justice arranged for Canadian border officials to delay the immediate execution of the arrest warrant "under the guise of a routine border check". The eventual hearing could lead to the CFO's extradition to NY.

"An extradition hearing is not a trial nor does it render a verdict of guilt or innocence", the statement continued. It took pains to stress Canada is following its extradition laws. "It's very, very hard for the person that's been accused to raise a defense because their evidence is not allowed unless it goes to the question of whether or not a crime has been committed".

Detained Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou now claims that Canada subjected her to detention, interrogation and search without telling her she was under arrest.

Botting said they had no reason to detain her as she had travelled to Canada many times before. This is known as "dual criminality".
