Senate panel approves Trump attorney general nominee

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham R-S.C. listens at left as Sen. Dianne Feinstein D-Calif. the ranking member objects to advancing the nomination of Bill Barr to be attorney general on Capitol Hill in Washington Thursday Feb. 7 2

The Senate Judiciary Committee voted Thursday along party lines to advance William P. Barr's nomination to become attorney general, a procedural step that sets the stage for his confirmation vote next week before the entire Senate.

The nomination will now be sent to the full Republican-controlled Senate, where Barr is also expected to have enough support to be confirmed in a vote that could come as early as next week.

Barr was nominated by President Donald Trump in December to replace former Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

Chairman Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said Barr told him that with respect to the special counsel's eventual findings, Barr would "not allow executive privilege as a reason to cover up wrongdoing".

Mr. Barr is one of the most well qualified individuals in the country to serve as Attorney General as he has held the job in the past.

Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein, the committee's ranking member, opposed Barr's confirmation, citing a memo he wrote the Justice Department previous year before he was nominated criticising the wide-ranging Russian Federation inquiry led by special counsel Robert Mueller.

The Belgium global , who is yet to sign a new deal with Chelsea , has less than a year remaining on his contract. The comments were made two months ago, but will be aired in a documentary on Wednesday.

Other recent candidates before the Senate Judiciary Committee have faced questions about their religious beliefs, concepts of sin and membership in charitable and fraternal organizations.

Democrats and many Republicans have said they believe Mueller's final report should be fully released.

Opponents have also cited a memo Barr wrote to the Justice Department before his nomination in which he criticized Mueller's investigation for the way it was presumably looking into whether Trump had obstructed justice. "I voted against Mr. Barr's nomination because I have little confidence in his willingness and ability to meet this challenge".

Whitaker said late last month the Mueller-led investigation is "close to being completed", although there has been no confirmation of this from the special counsel's office. On Thursday, Sen. John Kennedy, Republican of Louisiana, said that he would vote for it even though he said the "only question" is whether the Mueller report is going to leak "in toto" or in part.

The Republican president has repeatedly criticised the investigation as a "witch-hunt" and denies any collusion with Moscow.
