Amazon founder, Jeff Bezos, accuses United States gossip magazine of blackmail

Jeff Bezos accuses the National Enquirer of 'extortion and blackmail'

Bezos' accusations add another twist to a high-profile clash between the world's richest man and the leader of America's best-known tabloid.

Thirty years earlier, Richard Nixon ordered his Plumbers investigative unit to try to discredit Daniel Ellsberg in the press after he leaked the Pentagon Papers, a top-secret history of the Vietnam War.

AMI has denied the charges of blackmail and said the company acted "lawfully," according to the statement provided to Fox News.

He alleged that its parent company, American Media Inc., threatened to publish text messages and intimate images if Bezos did not stop his investigation into the company.

However, in the interests of expediating this situation, and with The Washington Post poised to publish unsubstantiated rumors of The National Enquirer's initial report, I wanted to describe to you the photos obtained during our newsgathering.

His claims of blackmail and extortion were backed by journalist Ronan Farrow, who took to Twitter on Thursday to say he and another journalist were also targeted by AMI.

Jeff Bezos Prefers to "stand up, roll this log over, and see what crawls out".

Hours after the Amazon founder and his wife divorced last month, the "National Enquirer" released the details - including private messages, of an affair with a former TV host, Lauren Sanchez.

Pointing at connections between Pecker, AMI and the government of Saudi Arabia, Bezos said he learned that "Pecker is ´apoplectic´ about our investigation", and that "the Saudi angle seems to hit a particularly sensitive nerve".

Shortly after that, Bezos opened an investigation into the leak led by Gavin de Becker, a longtime security consultant and former appointee of US President Ronald Reagan.

Sanchez, who is also his sister's manager, did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment.

Gavin de Becker told us that he does not believe that Jeff Bezos' phone was hacked.

According to Bezos, the media firm had promised not to publish "d*ck pics" of him if he agreed to certain conditions.

Sixers acquire Tobias Harris in blockbuster trade with Clippers
The guys give Sixers general manager Elton Brand a ton of credit for making such strong moves just 140 days into his tenure as GM. According to O'Connor, that's not yet a done deal as there is some dispute over the protections of that draft pick.

Furthermore, Bezos went on to include an email sent by AMI's deputy general counsel, Jon Fine, to de Becker's attorney.

"I engaged investigators to learn how those texts were obtained, and to determine the motives for the many unusual actions taken by the Enquirer", Bezos said.

"Rather than capitulate to extortion and blackmail", Bezos said, "I've chose to publish exactly what they sent me, despite the personal cost and embarrassment they threaten".

Bloomberg News reported that federal prosecutors were already reviewing the matter, including whether the tabloid breeched its immunity agreement. The story carries the bylines of Howard and two reporters.

AMI's relationship with Trump has gotten the company into hot water in the past. The deal also required the continuing cooperation of top AMI executives, including CEO David Pecker and Enquirer editor Dylan Howard.

In recent months, the Trump-friendly tabloid acknowledged secretly assisting Trump's White House campaign by paying $150,000 to Playboy model Karen McDougal for the rights to her story about an alleged affair with Trump.

The accusations of blackmail could complicate a related legal matter involving the National Enquirer's actions during the 2016 USA elections.

In a deal announced with federal prosecutors late a year ago, AMI said it would cooperate with those prosecutors.

It is a federal crime to threaten to injure someone's reputation in exchange for money or a "thing of value", though federal courts haven't made it clear whether a public statement, like the one demanded by AMI, could be considered something of value.

"It shows how complicated and risky it is to make an agreement with National Enquirer, " Levenson said. And, more importantly, what other "similar experiences" were they referring to?

'So what they have to be concerned about is the prosecutor saying, well you've now committed blackmail, you've now committed extortion, we're going to tear up that agreement and prosecute you the same way we prosecuted Michael Cohen.
