In sudden and tragic news, former longtime Dallas Cowboys quarterbacks coach Wade Wilson has passed away.

Before that, Wilson played for Dallas for three seasons, and was even a member of the Cowboys' the last Super Bowl-winning team. He also carried 239 times for 1,025 yards with nine touchdowns.

He also played for Atlanta, New Orleans, Dallas and Oakland before retiring in 1999.

The former Cowboys coach and player was with the organization for more than 16 years.

He coached the Cowboys quarterbacks once again, until Kellen Moore - now the Cowboys offensive coordinator - took over for Wilson in 2018.

Wilson played for five National Football League teams from 1981-98.

After leaving the Bears, Wilson spent 11 seasons as Cowboys quarterbacks coach from 2007-17. The team dismissed him after the 2017 season.

"Sad news today as we lost a teammate far too soon, " Aikman wrote on Twitter.

Wilson completed his career with a 75.6 quarterback rating on 1,391-of-2,428 passing for 17,283 yards.

Wilson, who was primarily a backup to Tommy Kramer until 1987, led the NFC in quarterback rating in 1988 and made the Pro Bowl.

The Minnesota Vikings selected Wilson in the eighth round (No. 210 overall) of the 1981 NFL Draft. He tutored Tony Romo, an undrafted free agent who became the franchise's all-time leader with 248 touchdown passes, and Dak Prescott, who was named National Football League rookie of the year in 2016 after being selected by Dallas in the fourth round of the draft.
