Prosecutors: Mueller Filing on Russian Company Was Itself Used for Disinformation

Mueller departs after briefing the U.S. House Intelligence Committee on Capitol Hill in Washington

The subsequent investigation has revealed that certain non-sensitive discovery materials in the defense's possession appear to have been altered and disseminated as part of a disinformation campaign aimed (apparently) at discrediting ongoing investigations into Russian interference in the US political system, ' according to the government's lawyers.

The special counsel disclosed the apparent online leak as part of its argument against allowing Concord's American attorneys to share sensitive information with individuals in Russian Federation, including Prigozhin, as the attorneys have requested. It does not say how the special counsel thinks the material made its way online but notes that there is no evidence the special counsel or any government servers were hacked.

The special counsel alleges that "non-sensitive discovery materials have been misused in a manner inconsistent with the terms of" a protective order that the judge issued in the case. The Mueller documents were largely "images of political memes from Facebook and other social media" that were posted during the 2016 election by the Internet Research Agency, a Russian social media troll farm.

"Enjoy the reading!" the account tweeted.

In late October, the account @HackingRedstone posted on Twitter a webpage with documents from the criminal case against Concord Management and Consulting. He was indicted by the Special Counsel's office in February 2018 for election interference. The webpage containing the files was deactivated "after a request from the government", the filing states. The account is is based out of Russian Federation.

The prosecutors said the filesharing site had confirmed to the Federal Bureau of Investigation that the account which posted the material was registered from an IP address - an identifier for devices connected to the internet - in Russian Federation.

A lawyer for Concord did not immediately comment.

Five officers wounded in Houston shooting
The suspect ran down the street before police were able to take him into custody and transport him to a hospital. However, as noted, it later turned out that four officers were shot and the fifth was injured during the chaos.

At the crux of the weird story is a Twitter account named @HackingRedstone that published documents with "folder structures that are unique to the files produced by the government in discovery, including tracking numbers assigned by the special counsel's office", Maddow said.

Under a court protective order, sensitive evidence in the case must be reviewed by a USA government "firewall" counsel and then a judge must give permission before the evidence can be to any non-U.

The Mueller filing comes amid an ongoing discovery dispute in the case.

The company has been arguing in court that it should be granted access to information about how the special counsel's team obtained confidential information about Concord. Some of the documents contained numbers and labels that the Justice Department had used to organize the evidence electronically.

They cite a Twitter account that surfaced in October 2016 purporting to have a stolen copy of evidence provided to the company.

Concord is controlled by Yevgeny Prigozhin, a wealthy businessman known as "Putin's chef" for his ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin. A vendor working for the defense team in the case, which also has access to the material, said they did not have indications of any unauthorized access on their end either, the filing says.

At least now we know where the attacks on Mueller are coming from - Russian Federation.
