Trump administration sanctions Venezuela’s state-owned oil company

Mike Pompeo U.S. secretary of state attends a United Nations Security Council meeting in New York

The remarks came four days after the Trump administration recognized Venezuelan National Assembly leader Juan Guaidó as interim president after Guaidó and his supporters asserted that the election previous year that kept Maduro in power was illegitimate.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro is confronting an unprecedented challenge to his authority after Guaido declared himself interim president, citing a fraudulent election.

Nicolas Maduro's election to a six-year presidential term last year has been widely criticized as a fraud created to keep him and his military allies in power despite the country's years-long spiral into misery and hunger.

Former senior foreign policy adviser to President Bill Clinton says that the Trump administration needs to focus on supporting the Venezuelan opposition. One of those nations is the United States, with President Donald Trump recognizing Guaidó as Venezuela's new leader.

The United States, Canada and many Latin American countries which had refused to recognize Maduro's May 2018 re-election immediately endorsed Guaido as the interim president, setting up the tense showdown in crisis-torn Venezuela.

Rubio, in a separate interview on NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday, said that Trump has "never needed any convincing on Venezuela" and has raised the issue for discussion with the senator more than the other way around. Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) took to Twitter to decry "U.S. meddling", adding that Venezuela's Supreme Court, stacked with Maduro loyalists, had declared Guaido's action "unconstitutional".

Israel reportedly demurred, fearing that enraging Maduro could endanger members of the 6,000-strong Venezuelan Jewish community.

Venezuela has backed down from their demand that United States diplomats leave the country, saying they're open to talks - as the Trump administration warned of a "significant response" if American personnel are threatened or intimidated.

Available exclusively with two seating rows, the SUV will be available in Black Metallic or Blizzard Pearl exterior paint. Its C-pillars bear special badges reminiscent of those Land Cruiser models wore all the way back in the 1960s.

If Maduro doesn't comply with this demand, the European Union said it "will take further actions, including on the issue of recognition of the country's leadership in line with article 233 of the Venezuelan constitution". The broadcaster dubbed the interview from Spanish into Turkish.

Guaido is offering amnesty to soldiers who back democracy and reject the current Maduro government.

However, nonessential staff were leaving the country, Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza said in a statement, calling it "an effective retreat".

Mr Maduro said the display showed the world he had the backing of the military and that Venezuela's armed forces were ready to defend the country.

There was no immediate response from the U.S. And the Wall Street Journal reported that the US government, which has recognized Guaido's claim to the presidency, gave him access to Venezuelan accounts in the Federal Reserve Bank of NY and other USA -insured banks.

At a special UN Security Council session Saturday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo described Maduro as part of an "illegitimate mafia state" responsible for Venezuela's economic collapse.

But no USA -backed coup has taken place in Venezuela.

Maduro said he wants peace, But he announced more military games next month which he says will be "the most important in the history of Venezuela".
