Former Trump adviser Roger Stone says he'll plead not guilty

Roger Stone

Roger Stone, a longtime ally of US President Donald Trump and adviser to his 2016 presidential campaign, has been charged with making false statements and witness tampering, according to a grand jury indictment made public by US Special Counsel Robert Mueller's office.

Roger Stone, former aide to President Donald Trump, called an investigation into his possible connection to a Russian email hacking scheme during the 2016 Presidential Election a "witch hunt".

Stone, the self-proclaimed "dirty trickster" was arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in a raid before dawn Friday at his home in Fort Lauderdale.

Fox News Channel's Tucker Carlson will present an interview with Roger Stone on "Tucker Carlson Tonight" during the show's 8 p.m. Friday, the network said.

Sunday morning, Stone said he would tell the truth about his communications with President Donald Trump and did not shut the door on the possibility of cooperation with special counsel Robert Mueller.

For his part, Stone, viewing Trump as a larger-than-life figure "who's got it all" - charisma, wealth, standing - pressed Trump to run for president.

Born in CT in 1952, Mr Stone first got involved in politics at the age of 8, agitating for Democratic candidate John F Kennedy.

The indictment showed Stone using language evoking mob bosses - and even citing a "Godfather" movie - as he called an unnamed associate facing Federal Bureau of Investigation inquiries "a rat" and "a stoolie" in a series of profanity-laced messages. The campaign said it fired him after he tried to grab too much of the spotlight while Stone insisted that he quit.

The construction of that sentence does not make clear who gave that order to a senior campaign official, but raises the possibility the order came from Trump himself.

Trump says no alternative plan for SOTU, will wait out partial shutdown
Trump's letter was based on the fact that Pelosi already had dispatched an invitation on January 3 to deliver the address. FILE - President Donald Trump delivers his State of the Union address to a joint session of the U.S.

The indictment suggests that Mueller knows who those officials are and is examining the roles they played.

It says that people in the highest levels of the Trump campaign were trying to find out WikiLeaks' plans to release derogatory information on Clinton, and Stone was the chosen conduit in that effort.

Corsi said he would advise Stone not to underestimate the amount of information already in Mueller's possession.

The indictment says that by June and July 2016, Stone told senior Trump campaign officials that WikiLeaks had obtained documents that could be damaging to Clinton's campaign.

Stone also said that the President has "absolutely, positively not" offered him a pardon for any wrongdoing.

In addition to the Corsi/Credico switch, Stone is charged with falsely testifying that he had no emails in which he discussed Assange or WikiLeaks with third parties, that he never asked his intermediary to pass along messages to Assange, that the intermediary did not communicate with WikiLeaks by email or text message, and that he never told anyone in the Trump campaign about his conversations with the intermediary. Trump has repeatedly slammed the Mueller investigation as a "witch hunt" and insisted there was "NO COLLUSION" with Russian Federation. The Trump campaign knew about Stone's involvement in seeking information on the Democrats, the complaint states. Stone has a tattoo of the former president on his upper back. Why Stone did not do the same thing is not exactly clear, although apparently he anxious that it would make Trump look bad by implying that his former adviser had done something criminal.

Mr Stone continued occasionally communicating with Mr Trump and stayed plugged into his circle of advisers, both formal and informal.

Six days later, hackers began releasing the personal emails of Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta.

The special counsel alleges that Stone lied about his interactions with WikiLeaks to the House Intelligence Committee, according to the indictment (pdf). I would certainly testify honestly.
