Winter Storm Watch issued ahead of Monday’s snowstorm

National Weather Service

Exact snowfall totals are still to be determined, but it does appear there will be enough to have to break out the snow shovel in much of the area, and possibly need the snow blower in the southern parts of our region.

Gusty winds will cause blowing and drifting snow.

A winter storm watch remains in effect from 1 a.m. Friday to Saturday morning. On Wednesday, the evening low is expected to reach 20 below zero.

A snowstorm will deliver 4-8 inches south of I-96 and 8-12 inches north of I-96 on Monday, with significant impacts to travel. Travel will be risky to impossible for the Monday morning and evening commutes due to heavy and blowing snow. Behind the system, the wind picks up and starts to bring in the colder air we have been talking about.

FLIGHT DELAYS: Seething Travelers Report 'Utter Hell' At Newark Airport
The FAA issued a statement saying: " We have experienced a slight increase in sick leave at two facilities". There were also gate hold and taxi delays between 15 minutes and 29 minutes in length at the airport.

Any leftover moisture, whether it be liquid water from melted snow or a slushy-snowy-mess, will refreeze quickly Tuesday evening and stay frozen through Wednesday morning.

While temperatures are dipping below zero, they have not beat the 1985 record for coldest temperature of 27 below zero. Gusty winds both Wednesday and Thursday will create unsafe wind chills near 20 below zero by Thursday morning!

Very cold temperatures and heavy snow are expected. Winds from the west at 20 km/h and gusting to 40. High: 27. Wind: SE-N 10-20 miles per hour, Gusting to 30mph.

THURSDAY: Partly cloudy with light snow possible late, otherwise cold.
