Deal reached to temporarily reopen U.S. government

Congress Votes to Re-Open Government, Back Pay Coming ASAP

Trump backed down from his demand that Congress provide more funds for his border wall with Mexico before federal agencies get back to work.

"We have reached a deal to end the shutdown and reopen the federal government", said Trump.

After polls showed Americans increasingly blamed him for the situation, Trump on Friday signed a measure to fund the government for three weeks as congressional negotiators try to work out a bill to fully fund it through September 30.

"I'm not going to debate on TV, you know that", Mulvaney said on "Face the Nation".

President Donald Trump signed a short-term spending bill Friday, reopening the federal government on Day 35 of the longest shutdown in USA history.

While the Trump administration is promising to pay federal workers as soon as possible, a senior official says agencies are in charge of their own payroll issues and workers should check with their departments for details about when the back pay will arrive. His favorability ratings plummeted and he faced a near rebellion from GOP senators, who bluntly told Vice President Mike Pence a day before Trump yielded that it was time to end the standoff.

The agreement to open the government came as about 800,000 federal employees missed their second consecutive paycheck.

Senior legislators from both parties said the latest shutdown, the 19th since the mid-1970s, was as ineffective as previous shutdowns but much more disruptive as it was the longest in USA history.

Arctic Air Brings Dangerous Wind Chill Temperatures
The United States will feel the brunt of an all-out Arctic assult as dangerously cold temperatures settle in next week. The wind chill values were between 20 and 25 negative degrees Fahrenheit. "1-2" of snow is likely by Saturday morning.

The president has the opportunity to squash all of the asinine arguments made against basic border security - and this is exactly what the Democrats are scared of.

He previously has indicated he was considering an emergency declaration to circumvent congressional funding powers if lawmakers do not fund his wall, an action that nearly certainly would be swiftly challenged by Democrats as exceeding his authority under the U.S. Constitution.

A little more than half of those employees are considered essential and are working without pay - including airport screeners and controllers.

Those doubts were stoked by Trump's threat on Friday to shut the government down again "if we don't get a fair deal from Congress" before temporary funding runs out on 15 February.

"The president went from talking about a wall along the entire southern border at one point during the campaign ... to let's have barriers where they work and let's have something else where barriers wouldn't work as well", Blunt said.

Falwell encouraged Trump to declare a national emergency if Democrats haven't agreed to wall funding by the time the current deal expires.

"Negotiations with Democrats will start immediately". It remained unclear when Trump would deliver his State of the Union Address, which was postponed during the shutdown fight. Faced with an internal revolt, Mr McConnell telephoned Mr Trump to tell him that the shutdown could not hold, reported the Washington Post. That could set the tone for skirmishes ahead, including investigations that the Democratic-led House, armed with subpoena power, plans into Trump's businesses and his 2016 presidential campaign's connections to Russian Federation.
