Russian Federation probe nets Trump ally Roger Stone

His political career began with the Nixon presidential campaign in 1972. He was charged with witness tampering, making false statements, and obstruction of proceeding.

Special counsel Robert Mueller's team alleges that Stone "took steps to obstruct" post-election House, Senate and FBI investigations into Russian campaign influence ops.

Trump on Friday called the investigation the "Greatest Witch Hunt in the History of our Country!" "NO COLLUSION!", Trump said on Twitter, using his most common slur for the Mueller probe. He encouraged him to run for president as early at 1988 and became one of Trump's first consultants when Trump mulled running ahead of the 2012 and 2016 elections.

Though not uncommon for the Federal Bureau of Investigation to make early morning arrests of targets under indictment, it's the first time Mueller has used that tactic.

"This statement was recently made by Roger Stone, essentially stating that he will not be forced by a rogue and out of control prosecutor to make up lies and stories about 'President Trump.' Nice to know that some people still have 'guts!'" A process against Richard Nixon was also initiated, but it was interrupted by Nixon's resignation.

His lawyer, Grant Smith, told Reuters that Stone would "vigorously" contest the charges. "He forgot to tell something to Congress and what it was was immaterial".

Mr Stone then emerged from court grinning broadly while flashing a Nixonian double V-sign and wearing a blue Ralph Lauren polo shirt.

We've known for a while that Stone communicated with a Wikileaks "intermediary" during the 2016 campaign, radio host Randy Credico, who tipped off Stone ahead of time about what he then said were key features of upcoming Wikileaks releases.

Organization 1 is referring to Wikileaks, which later released the damaging emails. Because of Trump, I could never get away with a certain [sic] my Fifth Amendment rights but you can.

Stone has said he had no inside information about the contents of the emails in WikiLeaks' possession or the timing of when they would be released.

"The President did nothing wrong".

On CNN, Sanders wouldn't directly answer a question about which campaign official directed Stone to obtain information about the WikiLeaks disclosures. Schiff says the most significant allegation is that a senior campaign official "was directed" in July 2016 to contact Stone about additional WikiLeaks releases. Hope it's good.' STONE responded in part, 'It is. Bloomberg and CNBC also reported that the official was Bannon, citing sources familiar with the situation. US prosecutors and intelligence agencies say that hackers commissioned by the Russian government were responsible for the theft.

"In subsequent conversations with senior Trump campaign officials, STONE claimed credit for having correctly predicted the October 7, 2016 release", the indictment alleges.

"In Mueller's mind this is a campaign cavorting with the enemy", Zeldin said. "I'm not going to be able to provide you some type of insider legal analysis". Though he was quickly ousted from the campaign, he has remained an ardent defender of the president and a coloruful critic of the Mueller probe.

An old friend of Donald Trump, Roger Stone has worked on Republican political campaigns since the 1970s. "This is someone who had been very active in Republican Party politics for a long time", Democratic US Senator Chris Coons told MSNBC.
