Zimbabwe economic crisis Fuel price hike national strike and a new currency

Econet Wireless Zimbabwe, the country's largest mobile operator, said its internet services had been cut off following an order from the government.

At least 13 people were injured by gunfire and 12 were arrested, human rights lawyers and doctors said. That means gasoline in Zimbabwe is now the most expensive in the world, based on data from GlobalPetrolPrices.com.

Security forces have responded to the protests with live ammunition, rubber bullets and teargas, which they've fired at protesters and into people's homes, Human Rights Watch, a New York-based advocacy group, said in an emailed statement Wednesday.

The hike of fuel prices by almost 150 percent is the source of discontent as it has a significant negative impact on the broader state of the economy and the average citizen's cost of living.

"The events of the past 24 hours have been characterized by a well-coordinated criminal behavior, destructive and violent pattern which included the barricading of roads, harassment of innocent members of the public, burning of cars, disruption of children's lessons in schools, forced closure of business entities, attempts to overrun police posts, destruction of property, unlawful possession and discharging of firearms in public, attacking tollgates and robbing them of cash as well as looting of shops", Ncube said.

Riot police have been deployed in the capital and in the southern city of Bulawayo.

"People are allowed to demonstrate peacefully but what we are seeing is mayhem", she said. But Zimbabwe's government said three people were killed, including a policeman who was stoned to death by an angry crowd.

A spokesperson for the opposition Movement for Democratic Change, Jacob Mafume, said the authorities had used the cover of the internet shutdown to kill protesters. The city is a center of opposition to the government.

"[Former President] Mugabe was evil but he listened", he added.

President Mnangagwa is now in Eastern Europe for an official visit scheduled to end at the World Economic Forum later this month in Davos, Switzerland.

"We have the cheapest fuel in the world".

The government over the weekend announced a price of $3.11 per liter (0.26 gallons) for diesel, and $3.33 per liter for gasoline. Some briefly opened but had closed by midday, asking workers to return home.

Zimbabwe is in the midst of an severe economic crisis and acute shortage of foreign currency, which has led to fuel, bread and other essential goods shortages.

The president has also touched upon the depreciation of Zimbabwe's national currency, saying that it is a direct result of restrictive measures imposed on the country by the European Union and the United States.

"The information we have received is that two people were shot dead in Chitungwiza (on the outskirts of Harare) and one person in Kadoma (town)", MDC opposition party spokesman Jacob Mafume told AFP.
